Ferrisburgh neighbor issue still a challenge; hearing on rats, dog rescuer continued

FERRISBURGH — Acting as the town’s board of health, the Ferrisburgh selectboard on May 8 considered a rat infestation at the Sand Road home of a dog rescuer.

While they came to no decision before continuing the hearing until May 29, board members did not rule out imposing sanctions in what appears to be an increasingly difficult situation for town officials.

“The board understands there may be other avenues to pursue,” said Selectboard Chairman Rick Ebel.

Commodore girls' lax showing well

VERGENNES — In the spring of 2017 the first-year Vergennes-Mount Abraham cooperative girls’ lacrosse team lost games by scores such as 16-4 (twice), 18-8 and 20-10, and then saw its best player head to St. Michael’s College, another key scorer graduate, and an exchange-student starter return to her homeland.

OV tops Mount Abe to highlight local baseball

ADDISON COUNTY — Visiting Otter Valley on Thursday continued its march through Division II high school baseball foes by coasting past host Mount Abraham Union, 16-1, in five innings.

In other baseball action late last week Otter Valley came up short at D-I Rutland, while Middlebury and Vergennes each split two games.

OTTERS TOP EAGLES

On Thursday the visiting Otters scored three two-out runs in the first and then broke the game open with big third and fourth innings on the way to a 16-1, five-inning win over the Eagles.

Vergennes-area school district sets corrective revote for May 22

VERGENNES — Articles originally voted on at the February Addison Northwest School District (ANWSD) annual meeting, as well as decisions made by the ANWSD board at a regular meeting — including a land swap with the town of Addison and the creation of a district-wide capital fund — will be properly decided by district voters in May 22 Australian balloting.

Eagle girls, MUHS boys prevail at Bristol track & field meet

BRISTOL — A relaxed weekday track and field meet at Mount Abraham Union High School Monday saw three Eagle seniors win two events apiece — Emma Carter, Jackson Counter and Abby Perlee — a feat matched by two visiting Middlebury Union athletes — sophomore Hunter Heffernan and freshman C.J. Bryant. 

Counter prevailed in the boys’ javelin and shot put, Perlee leaped to wins in the girls’ long and triple jumps, and Carter won the girls’ shot put and tied for first in the girls’ 100-meter dash.

Tiger boys' lax outlasts Lakers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team did enough on Tuesday to get past visiting Colchester, bolting to an early five-goal lead and putting it on cruise control to come away with a 10-7 victory over the Lakers.

The Tigers improved to 5-2 heading into more challenging home games, one against undefeated Champlain Valley that was played on Wednesday after the deadline for this issue, and another against 6-1 Essex on Friday.

Women's lacrosse to host NCAA contests

MIDDLEBURY — After winning two tough games this past weekend to claim the NESCAC championship on its home turf, the Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team will this weekend also open NCAA Division III tournament play on Kohn Field. 

The 16-2 Panthers at 1 p.m. on Sunday will meet the winner of a 1 p.m. Saturday game on Kohn Field between NEWMAC champion Babson (12-7) and NAC champion Castleton (11-6).

Another new contractor taking over Northlands Job Corps

VERGENNES — For the fourth time in eight years, a new company is taking over management of the Northlands Job Corps federal job-training center in Vergennes.

After a stint of about a year and a half during which it replaced a controversial center director, Alaska firm Chugach Education Services Inc. has lost its contract with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to operate Northlands.
