FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh town attorney has sent a certified letter to the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm threatening legal action “for the cutting of shade trees within the public right of way of Arnold Bay Road without prior approval,” unless the Vorstevelds respond to the letter by Jan. 1.

In the Nov. 22 letter, attorney James Carroll wrote, “I further ask that you ask your attorney or any identified insurance claims representative to contact me to discuss the contents of this letter and a possible resolution of this matter.”

ADDISON COUNTY — Area deer hunters enjoyed the second-best rifle deer season since 2005, bringing 554 bucks to Addison County weigh stations during the 16-day season that ran Nov. 11 to 26.

That total of deer taken came just 19 short of 2016’s total of 573, the highest since Vermont wildlife officials in 2005 banned the taking of spikehorn bucks during November’s rifle season, the most popular of the state’s deer hunting seasons.

MIDDLEBURY — Despite speed in its play and flashes of promise, the young Middlebury College men’s hockey team came up short twice this past weekend, when the Panthers hosted the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout.

On Friday Lawrence (Wisc.) pulled away late to defeat Middlebury, 6-3, and on Saturday Norwich bested the Panthers by what could be fairly called a misleading 5-1 final.

VERGENNES — While the main focus of a Nov. 15 meeting in Middlebury of the Addison County Regional Planning Commission’s Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) was the Agency of Transportation’s promise to study a truck bypass around downtown Vergennes (see story in this edition), VTrans and local officials also discussed replacing or rebuilding the Vergennes bridge over Otter Creek, possibly within a decade.

VERGENNES — Once again the possibility is alive of a bypass that would send truck traffic around downtown Vergennes, although local and state officials say one is not likely to be built for at least 30 years.

At a Nov. 15 meeting in Middlebury of the Addison County Regional Planning Commission’s Transportation Advisory Committee, or TAC, Vermont Agency of Transportation officials agreed to work with regional planners to study city bypass options, with a recommendation probably to be made by the end of 2018.

Vergennes eyeing earlier voting hours

Posted on November 22, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents could at some point have the option of voting in the morning before work, as do voters in most other Vermont towns.

At their Nov. 14 meeting, Vergennes City Council members talked seriously about changing the 9 a.m. start of voting hours to 7 a.m. The statewide closing hour for polls is 7 p.m.

Alderman Jeff Fritz opened the discussion by recommending a charter change, which would require approval by residents and the Vermont Legislatures, to make polling hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The second-ranked Middlebury College field hockey team rolled to a 4-0 victory over No. 1 Messiah in Sunday’s NCAA Division III final to claim the program’s second national title in three years and third overall.

The 20-2 Panthers scored three times in the first 18 minutes and used strong defense and goaltending and good ball movement to deal the defending champion Falcons (22-1) their first loss in 45 games. The margin of victory was the largest ever in a D-III final.
