VERGENNES — Vergennes and Ferrisburgh have more than their fair share of contested races on Town Meeting Day, while most — but not all — incumbents in those towns and in Addison, Panton and Waltham have decided to continue their public service.

Redhawks elminate Tiger boys from basketball playoffs

MIDDLEBURY — This winter, the Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team won 16 times, went undefeated in the Lake Division to earn the league title, and finished the regular season on a 10-game winning streak.

But in Tuesday’s first-round Division I playoff game, No. 12 Champlain Valley Union brought that run to a halt with a dominating performance, 70-45.

VUHS cheerleaders fourth in Division I

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School cheerleading team on Saturday finished fourth in Division I out of nine teams and tied for sixth overall out of 16 D-I and D-III squads at the state championships, which were held in the VUHS gymnasium.

The Commodores, who had earlier won the Lake Division championship in a separate competition, scored 144 points, trailing only Rutland (196), Essex (181) and Poultney (163) in D-I.

MUHS Nordic team competes in Strafford

STRAFFORD — Middlebury Union High School boys and girls combined for eight top-10 finishes at a six-team meet held on Saturday at the Strafford Nordic Center.

Team scores were not kept, but on a cold, windy day the Tiger boys dominated their 6-kilometer freestyle race by taking six top-10 finishes, including first-place by Sam Hodges.

Julia Rosenberg led the Tiger girls by taking second place behind winner Maria Magnan of BFA-St. Albans.

“There were lots of great performances,” said MUHS Coach Chas Lyons.

MUHS dancers take fourth place in Hip Hop

VERGENNES — The Middlebury Union High School dance team took fourth in Hip Hop and fifth in Jazz at Saturday’s state championships, which were hosted by Vergennes Union High School.

By virtue of the Tigers’ top-four finish in Hip Hop, they qualified to compete at the New England championships, which will be held in Braintree, Mass., on March 7.

OV boys top Harwood; VUHS next

BRANDON — The No. 4 Otter Valley Union High School boys’ basketball team shut down visiting No. 13 Harwood on Tuesday, 45-27, in a Division II first round playoff game.

The 15-6 Otters will host No. 5 Vergennes on Saturday at 2 p.m., with the winner earning a date in a Monday night semifinal in Barre, probably against undefeated No. 1 Woodstock, which will host No. 8 Mill River in a Friday quarterfinal.

City to offer recreation survey

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen have given the go-ahead for a recreation survey to be distributed at the city’s annual meeting at the Vergennes Opera House on the evening of Monday, March 2, and made available at the Vergennes Fire Department polling station during voting hours on March 3.

At their Feb. 17 meeting aldermen reviewed a draft of the 10-question survey, which is being written by Mayor Bill Benton; Dustin Hunt, a Vergennes resident who works for the Middlebury recreation department; and city resident Kathy Rossier.

Lawrence steps back from Ferrisburgh leadership role

Two square off for seat on VUES board

VERGENNES — One race on the Vergennes Town Meeting Day ballot offers a rematch of a 2012 contest decided by a single vote: Former multi-term incumbent Vergennes Union Elementary School board director Cheryl Brinkman is challenging incumbent Susan Ferland, the woman who unseated her three years ago, 329-328.

This time around, both are seeking a three-year term on the VUES board. A two-year term on the VUES board is also coming open, with Sue Rakowski running unopposed for that seat.
