VERGENNES — At the Vergennes City Council meeting last Tuesday, Jan. 29, aldermen made a decision on a future police station proposal and talked with Vermont Gas Systems about its plan to bring natural gas to the city.

Commodore boys' basketball outlasts scrappy Tigers

MIDDLEBURY — Round One didn’t disappoint.

Friday’s first 2013 matchup between two of the state’s best high school boys’ basketball teams delivered all the drama fans could hope for, as Vergennes remained undefeated by turning back Middlebury, 58-52, before the biggest crowd in the MUHS gym in a decade.

After the 14-0 Commodores sailed to an early 17-point lead, the 11-3 Tigers roared back and the second half saw seven lead changes and five ties before a Shep Carter three-pointer at 2:32 put VUHS up for good.

Tiger girls' hockey starts strong vs. North Country, but fall in the end

MIDDLEBURY — For much of Friday’s game against visiting North Country, it looked like the Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team would earn what has been an elusive win against a top-four Division II team.

The fifth-place Tigers have routinely outshot the teams above them in the standings, but have come up on the short end on the scoreboard.

MUHS skiers prevail in Nordic relays at Bolton

BOLTON VALLEY — The Middlebury Union High School Nordic ski teams swept to victories on Jan. 29 in relay races hosted by BFA-St. Albans at the Bolton Valley Nordic Center.

The Tiger girls’ and boys’ teams each prevailed over a couple dozen teams from a half-dozen schools in a three-leg relay held on a 3-kilometer course.

Fate of VUHS bonds at stake on Tuesday

VERGENNES — Vergennes voters will pick a new mayor in March, as Mayor Michael Daniels made good on his pledge made early in 2012 not to seek re-election for a fourth term.

City residents will also decide a four-way race for three city council seats among three incumbents and a former two-term alderman.

The marquee race for mayor will pit incumbent Alderman Bill Benton against former mayor and Alderwoman April Jin.

Holzapfel challenges Lawrences for Ferrisburgh selectboad seat

FERRISBURGH — Residents of Addison County’s third-largest town will have a choice on Town Meeting Day that could unseat a 12-year veteran of its selectboard.

Ferrisburgh selectboard chairwoman Loretta Lawrence is in Ferrisburgh’s only contested race: She is facing a challenge from Arabella Holzapfel, whose most recent appearance in the public eye came in 2012 as a losing candidate for the district of the Vermont House that includes Ferrisburgh, Addison, Panton, Vergennes and Waltham.

VUHS, MUHS both win big in boys' hoop

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ hoop action on Tuesday, Vergennes won big at home to remain unbeaten while Middlebury prevailed for the seventh straight outing, this time at Mount Abraham, to keep momentum heading into Friday’s big home match-up with the Commodores.

Otter Valley (2-10) had been scheduled to play at Bellows Falls (3-7), but that contest was postponed until Feb. 12.

Commodore track and field team tunes up for state meet

NORTHFIELD — Another first-place finish for senior hurdler Jon Welch highlighted the efforts of a small contingent from the Vergennes Union High School indoor track and field team on Saturday at Norwich University.

Welch won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.24, and was joined in scoring points in the event by teammate Austin Beamish, who finished sixth in 9.24.

Bixby seeks more funding from towns as its endowment dwindles

VERGENNES — Facing a fiscal crisis that Bixby Free Memorial Library board members believe could bankrupt the Vergennes fixture in a few short years, those board members this winter approached the five communities the library serves seeking a major boost in the support it receives within town budgets.

Bixby board members said they understood why responses from local selectboards were mixed when the Bixby initially asked for an increase in support from $13.66 per resident to about $24.
