BRISTOL — In a Tuesday high school girls’ soccer game that saw momentum switches, host Mount Abraham scored early and came away with a 1-0 victory after surviving stretches during which Middlebury controlled play.

Both teams entered Tuesday faring well this season after slow starts. The defending Division II champion Eagles improved to 5-6 with their fifth win in six games since falling to 1-5 with a loss at MUHS on Sept. 19. Their only setback in that streak was a 2-1 loss to D-II’s top team, Milton.

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School girls’ soccer team on Monday survived a slow start and strong second-half pressure from visiting Leland & Gray to earn a 3-2 victory and a small piece of history.

The result pushed the Otters to 7-3 and tied the 2005 team’s program record for regular-season victories — an accomplishment that comes just one year after a winless season.

Farmer finds good crop for county's clay soils — rice

FERRISBURGH — Boundbrook Farms and Good Companion Bakery owner Erik Andrus didn’t see himself as a commercial rice grower a decade ago when he set up shop on a 110-acre Ferrisburgh farm that lies a mile or so east of Vergennes.

In addition to founding what is now a successful bakery, Andrus was convinced he wanted to establish a new small-farm niche. What he had in mind was wheat for his baking and maybe barley for Vermont’s microbrewers, not rice.

Clippings by Andy Kirkaldy: GOP party head could sour voters

Posted on October 8, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

As our esteemed political correspondent, retired Middlebury College professor Eric Davis, has noted, 2016 could be a fruitful election year for the Vermont Republican Party.

Lt. Gov. Phil Scott looks to be the favorite to be Vermont’s next governor. Meanwhile, the Legislature and its majority of Democrats has had to struggle to balance the books in the past few years. That process has meant some unpopular decisions, and it appears the GOP could pick up some House and Senate seats next year.

BRISTOL — Two high school field hockey teams that had generated some recent momentum met at Mount Abraham this past Friday, and it was Mount Mansfield, not the host Eagles that kept moving forward.

The 5-3-1, Division I Cougars used speed and solid defense to stretch their unbeaten streak to five games with a 2-0 victory. The Eagles, who had won two of their past three — including a 2-0 win at Middlebury two days before — dropped to 3-6.

MIDDLEBURY — It got uncomfortable at the end, but the Middlebury Union High School football team defeated visiting Division I rival Essex on Friday, 34-27, to improve to 6-0 this fall and move the program’s winning streak to 28 games.

The Tigers led by 34-14 with 4:12 to go, but the Hornets used an interception and an onside kick recovery to create some late suspense before Tiger senior Chase Messner intercepted Essex quarterback Eli DiGrande as time expired.

Panton adopts junk ordinance

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

PANTON — On Oct. 24 a new Panton law is scheduled to take effect that will ban trash and junk vehicles from being left in sight from town roads or neighboring properties, regulate salvage yards in the town, and give property owners the right to have vehicles abandoned on their land towed at the owners’ expense.

The Panton selectboard adopted the law on Aug. 25 after a lengthy process that included a rewrite by a new Vermont League of Cities and Towns legal team, according to selectboard Chairman John Viskup.

Vergennes aldermen set hearing on new zoning laws

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday accepted updated zoning regulations from the city’s planning commission and scheduled a public hearing on the changes for 7 p.m. on Oct. 27. The council must hold at least one hearing before adopting the new zoning laws.

Planners held a lightly attended public hearing on Monday, after which City Manager and Zoning Administrator Mel Hawley said they made two changes to the updated law, one minor move to clarify language and another to correct what he called an oversight.

Panton moving forward with culverts as state studies farm runoff

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

PANTON — Panton road foreman Rick Cloutier is planning next week to install new culverts at an intersection near Lake Champlain, an action he can now take after town and state officials agreed at a September meeting that the culverts themselves are not contributing to potential lake pollution, said Panton selectboard members.

That meeting, triggered by a citizen letter to state officials, has led to a study of agricultural runoff issues in the area, Panton officials said.
