CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Goodrich Corp., which has a branch on Panton Road in Vergennes that is the city’s largest employer, in late April announced solid first-quarter results and a generally — if still cautiously — optimistic forecast for the balance of 2010.

The local plant, according to a corporate spokesman last month, is seeing an up-tick in business, and was seeking to fill 30 jobs, which he described as for “technicians and professional positions.”

On the Ball: Men’s lax wins; RPI next

As expected, the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team held serve on Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament, defeating visiting Goucher, 10-6.

Before getting to details of that game, let’s look ahead: The 12-5 Panthers will visit 14-2 Rensselaer (to avoid typos henceforth referred to as RPI) on Saturday for a second-round match-up. The game is a rematch of an April 20 contest, also played in beautiful downtown Troy, N.Y., won by the Panthers, 9-6.

ESSEX — The shorthanded Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team earned an important victory at Essex on Saturday, 9-5, to improve to 6-0.

The Tigers played without key midfielders last week, when they also outlasted visiting Mount Mansfield, 15-10 on Thursday. Injured junior all-star Liz Kelley hopes to return this week, senior Eliza Carver will miss the rest of the season with an injury suffered on Monday, and senior Dea Vaczy was out with a lingering illness on Saturday.

Men’s lax NCAA draw

For the first time, on Sunday the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team lost a NESCAC championship game, 13-12 at Tufts. No doubt the Panthers are still kicking themselves for losing that 11-7 lead they held late in the third period against the 16-1 Jumbos, who were ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III.

Vergennes residents consider finances, educational equity

VERGENNES — Few foes of proposed one-board Addison Northwest Supervisory Union governance spoke out at a Tuesday forum held at Vergennes Union Elementary School in advance of the May 11 revote on unification.

But school board officials acknowledged fears about a potential increase in the city’s tax rate and the assumption of debt from Ferrisburgh that prompted petitioners in Vergennes to ask for a new vote.

VERGENNES — On Saturday in Vergennes, the first-ever varsity lacrosse game between Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high schools went to the first-year Eagle program, 9-6, over the third-year Commodore team.

The surprising Eagles improved to 3-3 with their second win in 24 hours — they defeated Milton on Friday, 4-2.

Senior long-stick middie Bela Dobkowski, part of a Mount Abe defense that has teamed with senior goalie Craig Camara to allow just 6.3 goals per game, said the Eagles are gaining confidence.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ tennis team continued this spring’s winning ways on Monday with a 7-0 victory over visiting U-32 in which all of the Tiger singles and four doubles players prevailed in impressive fashion — no Raider won more than two games in any set.

Coach Sarah Harrison Lynn said she knew U-32 (1-3) did not pose the toughest test on the 4-1 Tigers’ schedule, but was still pleased that her athletes played with focus and also took the opportunity to try to improve their games.

Think you know your local sports?

Our crack team of Addison Independent trivia geeks (Jessie Raymond, Katie Flagg, Trent Campbell and yours truly) competed in and did OK (second place) at Monday night’s useless-data smackdown at Two Brothers Tavern.

Because the event was organized to benefit the Symbol Formerly Known As ACCAG, better known now as Helping to Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE), we had been hoping for plenty of (not too well-informed) competition to help raise money for the cause. With one exception, The Weybridge Cats, that proved to be the case. We’re angling for a rematch next year.
