Vergennes police to get SUV, not body cameras

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Police Department will be getting a new Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) enforcement SUV, but that purchase will come at the expense of delaying the purchase of body cameras for each of the department’s eight full- or part-time officers.

That delay is the result of an Aug. 28 Vergennes City Council decision to adjust the police budget to allow the purchase of the CMV at a cost higher than expected when the council budgeted for one new police vehicle in June.

MIDDLEBURY — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team on Saturday continued its early-season march through the Division II portion of the schedule, but the Eagles met more resistance in defeating host Middlebury, 2-0, than they had in their first two games.

The 3-0 Eagles had outscored their first two opponents by 13-0, but Coach Mary Stetson said the Tigers made them earn their third victory.

Tiger football rebounds to knock off Hurricanes

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury Union High School football team coming off a disappointing opening loss just might have made a statement in its second game.

The Tigers will be reckoned with this fall.

On Friday the Tigers toppled Hartford, 27-14. And Hartford, a Division I finalist a year ago, had opened by winning at defending champion St. Johnsbury the week before.

Junior quarterback Tim Goettelmann, who ran 16 times for 108 yards and scored three touchdowns, explained what the win meant to the Tigers.

Commodore girls' soccer takes down Tigers

VERGENNES — Tuesday’s girls’ soccer game at Vergennes Union High School pitted visiting Middlebury, a team that graduated nine valuable seniors and now features a half-dozen freshmen, against the Commodores, who returned two all-stars to their lineup after they missed most or all of the 2017 season.

And on Tuesday those all-stars, senior striker Ciara McClay and junior center midfielder Emily Rooney, combined for five goals and an assist in their team’s 5-0 victory over a Tiger team that is understandably still seeking its identity.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council said goodbye to longtime City Manager Mel Hawley at its Aug. 28 meeting, Hawley’s last as manager, and welcomed a new council member by appointing David Small to replace Alderman Matt Chabot, who the council had hired the week before to replace Hawley.

Small’s appointment will run through this coming March, when if he wishes to continue on the council he will have to stand for election.

Panton and Waltham residential taxpayers see modest decreases

Posted on August 30, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

PANTON/WALTHAM — Homeowners in both Panton and Waltham saw modest decreases in their property tax bills when they opened them recently compared to their 2017-2018 bills. Owners of commercial property and second homes in both towns saw essentially level taxes compared to a year ago.

Panton’s residential rates remain lower than those from two years ago, although non-residential rates have risen by about 5.5 cents. A drop in the town portion of the tax bill is offsetting higher school rates.

Kirkaldy, Andy ONLINE.jpg

Many drivers curse, shake their fists and make certain other impolite gestures at other drivers, including at me, to express their impatience and frustration.

OK, I won’t claim to be a perfect driver, but those other folks, let me tell you…

Let’s face it: Most of us think we’re pretty good behind the wheel, and that it’s other drivers who are dangerous and incompetent.

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School administrators did not have to look far and wide for a new program head when boys’ soccer coach Mike Corey stepped down last winter after leading the program since 1995.

New varsity coach Bob Russell, a Mount Abe middle school social studies teacher, was not a surprising choice: He had coached the Eagle boys’ junior varsity team for several years, and before then the 8th-grade boys for several more.

VERGENNES — For the second time this year Vergennes Union High School is looking at operating for a number of months without one of its two gymnasiums.

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard last week instructed town attorney Jim Carroll to inform the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm through their attorney, Jim Foley of Middlebury, that any further tree-cutting in the town right-of-way along Arnold Bay Road would require a state permit.
