VERGENNES — On Saturday, the Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team got a solid effort from its midfield and shorthanded defense, and junior forward Kenadi Dattilio buried a goal in each half. That combination proved to be enough to give the host Commodores a 2-0 win over Middlebury.

The win also pushed VUHS to 5-4-1 and unofficially into sixth place in Division II. The Tigers, despite being more competitive this year, fell to 2-6-2.

Local businesses making ends meet

ADDISON COUNTY — None of a wide range of business owners, executives and experts recently asked about the area’s economy were ready to announce that happy days are here again: Their attitudes ranged from cautiously optimistic to skeptical, but hopeful.

In a statement echoed by many interviewed, Waybury Inn co-owner Joe Sutton said he and others in the hospitality sector have adapted to flat or modest growth.

“Basically, even is the new good,” Sutton said. “The general concept is staying at par ... or up a little bit is OK, and you have to watch your expenditures.”

VERGENNES — Lead negotiators on both sides said in a joint interview last week that they are satisfied with the new, two-year Addison Northwest Supervisory Union teachers’ contract, which will expire in June 2012 and preserves teachers’ existing health-care benefits and base pay.

Negotiators reached agreement in an eight-hour mediation session in mid-August, and in late September both the Addison Northwest Teachers’ Association and the ANwSU board — which represents Panton, Waltham, Vergennes, Addison and Ferrisburgh — gave final approval.

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team on Tuesday rode its usual strong defense and what was for the Otters an offensive outburst to pick up a key Marble Valley League win, 2-1, over visiting Windsor.

The 6-2 Otters passed the 5-2-1 Yellowjackets both in the MVL B Division and in the Vermont Division II standings with the victory. Unofficially, Woodstock (5-2) remains in first with more quality points in a tight D-II race.

BRISTOL — In a high school boys’ soccer game on Friday in which both teams had opportunities, host Mount Abraham had the slightly better chances and took fuller advantage of them than Vergennes, and the result was a 3-0 Eagle victory in this fall’s third meeting of the two teams.

The Eagles snapped a three-game skid and improved to 3-4-1. On Friday they had players back who missed games due to disciplinary issues but were missing three starters due to injury,

Clippings: Small steps toward peace add up

The planet probably needs the United Nations’ International Day of Peace for the same reasons we need Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

In the latter case, as any parent will tell you, all the other days are children’s days.

In the case of the International Day of Peace — which occurs every year on Sept. 21 — it sure seems like the people of Earth devote the other 364 days to violence and war.

Vergennes police adding Tasers; officials cite safety, cost benefits

Posted on September 30, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Police Department has joined a small, but growing, list of state law enforcement agencies to add Taser stun guns to their equipment lists.

Chief George Merkel said the department now owns two $1,000 Tasers, which he believes are a safer tool for subduing suspects than other options at police officers’ disposal — physical restraint, pepper spray or batons.

Merkel said enough people are now familiar with Tasers that even their potential use can defuse situations.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh artists Denis and Judith Rey Versweyveld have shared a home for 48 years, and a passion for art for even longer.

But until two years ago, they had never directly collaborated on their art. Now, their latest show of their joint work — called “Shelter:Dwelling:House:Home,” sculptures of homes by Denis painted on by Judith, plus Judith’s paintings of homes — is on display in the Vermont Arts Council’s Spotlight Gallery in Montpelier through Oct. 29.

Eagle field hockey, Essex settle for tie

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team bounced back from a lackluster loss at Mount Mansfield this past weekend to earn a positive result on Tuesday, a 0-0 tie with visiting Essex.

Critically, said Coach Mary Stetson, after allowing five goals to the Cougars last Friday, the Mount Abe defense buckled down on Tuesday in front of sophomore goalie Lizzie Huizenga (seven saves).

On the Ball: Defense never rests

Posted on September 29, 2010 | Blog Category:

Let’s just say I have the background to respect defense in athletics.

I played defense, one season for my high school varsity soccer team and then two years for the Middlebury College B team. My daughter started on defense for a total of five seasons for two varsity teams at Middlebury Union High School, and now she does for her college field hockey team. Championships are rarely won without good defense; I won’t say that no one recognizes that more than I, but believe I understand the value of defense as much as anyone.
