BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School girls’ soccer team wrote another chapter in its historic season on Tuesday, when the Otters won a playoff game for the first time.

In a Division III first-round game, the No. 8 Otters defeated visiting No. 9 Williamstown, 2-1, when senior converted field hockey player Amy Jones one-timed home a feed from classmate Isabelle Kingsley with 4:17 left in the first overtime period.

The Otters this season had already set records for wins, and Tuesday’s home playoff game was a program first.

The Highlanders received three goals from Philip Hekeler and improved to 8-1-3; they advanced to a Saturday quarterfinal at No. 4 Mount Abraham.

The Otters finished at 3-9-3 despite what the Harwood coach described as a “massive” effort on their part and despite 17 saves, many of them challenging, from goalie Colin Nicklaw. OV tested Highland goalie Esteban Garcia Guiance five times.

BRISTOL — In the end, 70 minutes of high school field hockey in Bristol on Friday settled nothing, except that maybe both host Mount Abraham and Middlebury wanted to win and might be ready for this week’s playoffs.

The result was a 0-0 tie that left the Division II Eagles at 4-6-4, including a 2-1-4 record in the past seven games. They will earn the No. 4 seed in D-II and host a quarterfinal, unofficially as of Sunday against Spaulding (7-5-2). The Vermont Principals Association was set to make playoff pairings final on Monday morning.
