Marlins swim past Winooski, 264-164, at league meet

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Marlins on this past Thursday made the most of their third and final home Champlain Valley Swim League meet by splashing past visiting Winooski, 264-164.

Leading the way for the host Marlins was Aidan Chance with four wins and Kaden Hammond, Oliver Poduschnick and Holly Staats with three apiece. Connor McNamara added a pair of victories at another warm and sunny home event.

Bixby starts new chapter with Masha Harris at helm

VERGENNES — The new Bixby Memorial Library executive director has a Dachshund named Lemon and a Toyota Camry with more than 200,000 miles she insists is not a lemon; she enjoys cribbage and embroidery, plays the oboe, has published a couple pieces of short fiction, is working on a novel, and has visited all 251 Vermont towns.

And, yes, she loves books, especially Victorian literature.

Vergennes school tax rate level; overall levy up by 1 percent

VERGENNES — After all the dust settled in Montpelier in late June, Vergennes residential taxpayers will not see an increase in the school portion of their property taxes.

The city’s new 2018-2019 homestead property tax rate, according to city hall employees on Tuesday, is $1.6187, a half-cent lower than the 2017-2018 rate of $1.6237.

Legion stays alive in race for playoff

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County American Legion baseball team rallied for a crucial victory in the final game of its four-game weekend homestand on Sunday, helping preserve the local nine’s Northern Division playoff hopes.

In the second half of Sunday’s doubleheader at the Middlebury College field, AC spotted the Colchester Cannons three first-inning runs, but came back to prevail, 7-4.

In the opener, the Cannons scored 10 runs in the final two innings to snap a 5-5 tie and take a 15-6 victory.

Champs swim to two victories in home pool

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Champs picked up two recent home Champlain Valley Swim League wins, edging Burlington Tennis Club, 244-238, on July 5, and swamping St. Albans, 399-191, on Tuesday.

On July 5 two Champs paced the way with three wins apiece, Allison Croke and Will Clark, while Petra Fearon and Flint Crary each won twice. Vergennes won six of the first seven freestyle relay races to take a big lead, enough to hold off BTC when the visitors won the final three free relays.

Marlins take solo wins in team losses

MIDDLEBURY — Despite many strong individual results, the Middlebury Marlins swim team dropped two recent Champlain Valley Swim League meets.  

On July 5, visiting Town of Essex Swim Team topped the Marlins, 330-135. Pacing the Middlebury efforts were Holly Staats, with three victories, and Eleanor Orten, with a pair of first-place finishes.

Marlins who won or placed in the top three vs. TEST in individual events were:

•  U-8 girls: 1. Aurora Foley, 26.15; 3. Louisa Orten.

New vodka distillery pitched in Vergennes

VERGENNES — If all goes as planned, by next year Vergennes could add a distillery to its manufacturers of adult beverages, a growing list that already includes Shacksbury Cider and Hired Hand Brewery, although for now the latter still produces its ales in Bristol.

Second search to replace Hawley seen as hopeful

VERGENNES — Vergennes Deputy Mayor Jeff Fritz on June 26 updated the Vergennes City Council on the search for a replacement for City Manager Mel Hawley.

Hawley will retire July 24, and after the city committee led by Fritz came up empty-handed the council agreed to hire the Vermont League of Cities and Towns to handle the search for a new Vergennes manager.

Fritz, head of the city manager search committee, reported that as of June 22 VLCT had received 23 applications that League officials considered to be “qualifiable” to take over from Hawley.

Legion baseball falls in road doubleheader

ST. ALBANS — The Addison County American Legion team dropped a road doubleheader to defending Vermont champion Franklin County on Saturday, 7-0 and 7-6, including a painful second-game setback in which host FC scored six times in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the win.
