Andy Kirkaldy: Boston Marathoners were inspiring in so many ways

Kirkaldy Klippings_474.jpg

To start with, the Boston Marathon wheelchair racers who whip by first are absolute, astonishing beasts who must train for the event by ripping phone books in half. They couldn’t be more impressive. It’s also hard to imagine they make it 26.2 miles through eight Massachusetts towns without crashing — they ride six or eight inches behind each other, taking turns carving though the air, a practice fans of motor sports know as drafting.

WALTHAM — A Waltham affordable housing project that the Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) has looked at for years now could become a reality.

The ACCT has applied to the Waltham Development Review board for a conditional use permit that would allow the trust to install seven modular duplexes on a 2.3-acre Maple Street Extension site that until 2009 housed the Gevry trailer park.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ lacrosse team on Friday broke into the win column by outlasting visiting Otter Valley, 7-5, in a defensive battle.

The Eagles improved to 1-1, while the Otters, who were playing their second game in two days, dropped to 0-3.

The game was close throughout, but Mount Abe held a slim lead most of the way. The Eagles led, 2-1, after one period, but OV fought back to tie the game at the half, 4-4. Mount Abe scored the only goal of the third period, and then earned a 2-1 edge in the fourth quarter.

Proposed city playground now in jeopardy

VERGENNES — The proposed East Street preschool playground appeared to be on life support after Tuesday’s Vergennes City Council meeting.

Project designer David Raphael of Middlebury landscape design firm LandWorks told the aldermen on Tuesday he could no longer continue to devote time to the project, and that because of needed sitework it appeared even the scaled-down version approved by aldermen this winter could not be built for its $42,000 price tag.

Ferrisburgh to test marketing angle for land sale

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard voted on April 7 to pursue a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant that could help the town market the 34.91-acre parcel Ferrisburgh owns at the intersection at Routes 7 and 22A.

Acting on the suggestion of resident Tim Davis, who offered to serve as the grant manager, Ferrisburgh will apply for a $50,000 USDA Rural Development Grant that would fund a study to determine whether an agricultural incubator space, also called a food hub, could be successful on the property.

Ed Place and Jon Sullivan.JPG

VERGENNES — When Addison resident Ed Place and Vergennes resident Jon Sullivan met at the Bixby Library a little more than three years ago, they quickly realized they were not getting acquainted, but re-acquainted.

It turned out that Place had been Sullivan’s 4-H shooting instructor when Sullivan was 14, about 17 years earlier. That was before Sullivan left his native Vergennes to earned his degrees in computer science and business management at the University of Vermont, and then headed to California to work for more than 12 years for a high-tech firm.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School boys’ lacrosse team spotted visiting rival Mount Abraham two early goals on Tuesday, but outscored the Eagles by 7-1 in the two middle periods on the way to an 11-8 victory in the opener for both squads.

The Eagles earned a 7-2 edge in shots on goal in the opening quarter. But VUHS junior goalie Broc Clark held the fort after Eagle senior middie Gus Catlin and sophomore middie Owein LaBarr, from junior attacker Lucas Richter, gave Mount Abe a 2-0 lead in the first 4:34.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ tennis team’s season got off to a promising — and chilly — start this past Saturday, when the Tigers edged visiting BFA-St. Albans, 4-3, in cold, windy weather that challenged both squads.

Tiger Coach Laura Rumbough was pleased her team defeated the Comets, who knocked off MUHS twice in 2014, despite the conditions — and without starting singles player Faith Isham.

RUTLAND — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team won its season opener on Friday, April 10, 12-7 at Rutland, after two games earlier in the week were postponed.

The Tigers’ April 14 game at BFA-St. Albans was also postponed. No makeup dates have been announced, leaving the Tigers’ next regularly scheduled game an April 28 date at Mount Mansfield.

At Rutland, the Tigers started slowly.

“We got off to a rocky start, down 0-3 in the first 5:35 of play, but settled defensively,” said Coach Kelley Higgins.
