Girls' hockey runs streak to five games

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team put the finishing touches on a 2-0 week on Friday evening by blanking visiting Burr & Burton, 4-0, behind strong defense and steady offensive pressure.

On Monday the young Tigers had defeated the North Country/Lyndon cooperative squad, 4-3 in overtime, with the team’s only senior, Aleta Mathers, netting the extra-time game-winner. Mathers also scored twice on Friday to cap a big week.

Boys' hockey settles for tie in tough night

MIDDLEBURY — Friday was a difficult night for the Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team, as the host Tigers lost a two-goal third period lead in a 3-3 tie with last-place Rutland — and watched junior co-captain Kam Bartlett helped off the ice after he apparently was knocked unconscious in the first period.

Ian Gill's Golden Glove title came from hard work and grit — and his family

CORNWALL — Back when he was in Cornwall’s elementary school, Ian Gill — now a University of Vermont senior majoring in finance — would drive with his dad, Brian Gill, and brother Adam to watch members of his dad’s Cornwall Boxing Club battle other amateurs in the Vermont Golden Gloves competition.

Vermont boxing legend Ernie Farrar staged the annual midwinter matches, actually the Northern New England championships, in Burlington’s Memorial Auditorium.

Addison spending proposed to rise 1 percent

ADDISON — Addison residents on Town Meeting Day will be asked to approve selectboard and highway budgets and charitable contributions that total less than a 1 percent increase in spending — or about $8,800 — over current levels.

Currently a penny on the Addison tax rate raises about $22,000, according to Town Clerk Marilla Webb; therefore, even with no grand list growth that increase will not have a major impact on the municipal portion of the town’s tax rate.

In basketball, Commodore girls are too much for Tigers

MIDDLEBURY — An improving Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team hung with visiting Vergennes for the better part of three quarters on Tuesday.

But with Tigers down by just six at 1:35 of the third quarter, the Commodores used their advantage in the paint in an 18-1 run on the way to a 51-35 victory. Senior forwards Emma Bryant and Brianna VanderWey combined for 14 points in that stretch.

Wrestlers post wins at Mt. Mansfield tournament

JERICHO — Two Otter Valley and one Mount Abraham union high school wrestlers won their weight classes at Mount Mansfield Union’s annual Jason Lowell Memorial Tournament on Saturday, and many wrestlers from those schools, Vergennes and Middlebury scored top-four finishes.

Otters David Williams at 138 pounds and Josh Beayon at 182 rolled to titles, as did Eagle Nate Lavoie at 152 pounds.

Return of Tiger hoop star Keagan Dunbar causes stir in Pepin

MIDDLEBURY — The 500 fans in Middlebury College’s Pepin Gymnasium before Saturday’s women’s basketball game did not give their loudest cheers to any of the host Panthers during player introductions.

The most noise came when the announcer called the name of the freshman wearing No. 21 for Colby: Keagan Dunbar.

Addison race tops Vergennes-area ballots

ADDISON — Barring a write-in campaign the only Town Meeting Day race for a major town office in the Vergennes area will come in Addison, according to petitions for offices filed by the deadline this past Monday.

In Addison multi-term incumbent Selectman Peter Briggs will face a challenge for a two-year seat from Alden Harwood.

Briggs, a farmer who has also mounted challenges for the Vermont House and Senate as a Republican, first won a spot on the Addison selectboard in 2015.
