The Vergennes Development Review Board on Aug. 20 will hold public hearings on proposals for Hired Hand Brewing Co. to begin taking over School Street space now occupied by the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes and for Shuen Lee Chinese Restaurant to move from the Aubuchon Plaza to 10 Main St., Vergennes, and build a 625-square-foot addition to allow for eat-in dining.

VERGENNES — Just retiring City Manager Mel Hawley’s longevity in his position has been remarkable, said Vergennes Mayor Renny Perry at a Tuesday evening gathering honoring Hawley in the Vergennes Opera House.

Perry should know. He worked as one of two city managers in Vergennes when Hawley left for 10 years, between 1998 and 2008, to work for Country Home Products, and Perry has also served as a city manager and mayor in New Hampshire.

That’s when Hawley will step down for good. He had planned to leave after this past Tuesday’s celebration, but agreed the week before to fill in on a part-time basis to give the council another five weeks to complete its hiring process.

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County American Legion baseball season came to a disappointing end over the past few days with four losses to contending teams. Those results left AC with a 5-16 mark that is identical to that of a year ago, and in last place in the Northern Division.

Coach Mike Estey believes this summer’s team probably had more talent overall than the 2017 edition, but that the league-wide quality of competition also improved over this past summer.
