State questions ANwSU bookkeeping

VERGENNES — The Vermont Agency of Education has sanctioned the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union by withholding state and federal grant funds, calling the ANwSU’s financial record “very weak” in a July 3 letter and citing many accounting problems in a July 1 report summarizing a June 10 fiscal monitoring visit.

That monitoring visit came two months after the AOE suspended many ANwSU grant funds because of the district’s failure to file required reports in a timely or satisfactory manner, ANwSU officials acknowledged last week.

Addison neighborhood watch group still active

ADDISON — Although Addison residents say crime in their town has slowed dramatically with alleged serial burglar and town resident Raymond Ritchie behind bars for the past year, the Addison Community Watch remains active, said watch organizer Lorraine Franklin.

“The group is still very much in place,” Franklin said. “If something does happen, we get the word out.”

Alleged burglar Raymond Ritchie fights his plea agreement

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison man arrested in July 2013 and accused of committing a rash of burglaries in his hometown and other county communities was back in court on Monday, this time contesting the terms of a plea agreement to which he agreed in April.

Panton workers are re-appointed to jobs

PANTON — Panton’s charter change, which residents approved on Town Meeting Day and the Vermont Legislature supported this past winter with only minor language changes, became official on July 1 — and three key town jobs are no longer elected positions.

The Panton selectboard met on Tuesday to choose a town clerk, treasurer and delinquent tax collector, and chose to re-appoint the elected incumbents — clerk Jean Miller, treasurer Diane Merrill and tax collector Barbara Fleming.

Big fish helps Brakeley win pike rodeo

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury resident Megan Brakeley won the Middlebury Mountaineer’s month-long Green Mountain Pike Rodeo by hauling in the second-largest Northern pike (38.5 inches) of any of the 20 competitors, plus another five pike that exceeded the event’s 22-inch minimum.

Legion reaches 9-4 in Northern Division

MONTPELIER — The Addison County American Legion team remained in the thick of the Northern Division playoff hunt by splitting four recent games. AC is 9-4 in the league, 9-5 overall.

On Tuesday, AC won a back-and-forth contest at Montpelier, 4-3. On Sunday, visiting Essex rallied past AC, 3-2. And on this past Saturday, AC split a doubleheader at Burlington, dropping the opener, 8-7, before winning the nightcap, 8-2.

Retail pro takes chance, follows her dream to Panton General Store

PANTON — For most of her 30 years in retail, about half of them spent working her way up in the Jolley Associates chain of convenience stores, Bridport native Linda Goodspeed dreamed of running her own country store.

In the first weekend of June, that dream came true for Goodspeed, 51, who now lives in Vergennes with her husband, John.

That’s when Goodspeed threw open the front door of the Panton General Store, which former owner Andy Megroz had decided last fall to shut down at least for the winter.

Visiting Essex splashes past Middlebury Panthers

MIDDLEBURY — The visiting Town of Essex Swim Team outpointed the Middlebury Panthers, 280-212, in Tuesday Champlain Valley Swim League action.

TEST swept to wins in all the individual 12-and-under, U-14 and U-18 boys’ races as Jake McIntyre, Jacob Hammond and Andrew Gadbois prevailed in three races apiece, respectively, in those age groups.
