Women's hoop to host quarterfinal

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team this past weekend split its two final regular season NESCAC games, an effort good enough to nail down the No. 4 seed for the league’s postseason and earn the right to host a quarterfinal game this Saturday. The Panthers also won a non-league game at Plattsburgh on Tuesday.

Andy Kirkaldy: Appreciate this, Boston backers

I tell my daughters all the time they are spoiled.

We didn’t raise them to root for Boston professional sports teams, even though both Kristine and I grew up rooting for them, in her case especially the Bruins on Channel 38, the local UHF station back in the day when Orr and Esposito helped the Bs win a couple of Stanley Cups.

Armell and Ebel vie for Ferrisburgh selectboard seat

FERRISBURGH — Two candidates who would be first-time selectmen are competing this winter for an opening on the Ferrisburgh selectboard, Dennis Armell and Rick Ebel. Ferrisburgh residents will choose between the two men in Australian balloting on March 7.

Armell and Ebel are seeking to replace Jim Warden, who will step down after 12 years on the selectboard. Meanwhile, incumbent Selectman Jim Benoit is running uncontested for re-election on the Town Meeting Day ballot.

North Country roars back to defeat Eagle girls' basketball

BRISTOL — A Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team that has been playing well ran into another hot team on Saturday and came up short, 53-42, to visiting North Country.

The Division I Falcons made it six straight wins by erasing the Eagles’ 25-18 halftime lead with a 14-3 run out of the locker room, during which junior standout Kylie Wright hit three three-pointers and scored 11 of her game-high 24 points.

In girls' hoop: A Tiger junior scores her 1,000th point

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury Union High School junior Keagan Dunbar scored the 1,000th point of her career in the third quarter of the Tigers’ home game vs. Mount Abraham on Wednesday night to highlight local girls’ basketball action in the latter half of last week.

Dunbar became just the fourth member of the Tiger girls’ basketball program to reach that milestone.

Girls' ice hockey splits a pair of games

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team split two games last week, missing an opportunity to gain ground on first-place Essex in the process.

Entering this week, Essex, which lost on Wednesday and tied on Saturday, remains in first place at 13-2-1, followed by Rutland (13-3-1) and MUHS (11-4-1).

City police bust trio for drug trafficking

VERGENNES — A routine traffic stop by Vergennes police this past Friday night led to the arrest of three Albany, N.Y., residents for heroin and cocaine possession and trafficking in heroin.

The three suspects — Robert Scales, 33; Jamel Sears, 30; and Kessiah Harvin, 26 — were lodged for the weekend at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility after police alleged they found 27 grams of powdered cocaine and 100 bags of heroin in a backpack in the trunk of a car driven by Harvin.

CHITTENDEN COUNTY — Middlebury Union High School Nordic skiers Sam Hodges and Ursula Volz were the individual winners of the three-day Tour De Chittenden, which drew competitors from 13 schools around northern Vermont to races held this past Thursday, Saturday and Monday.

Revised ANWSD tax estimates show mostly lower rates

VERGENNES — A revised set of residential school tax estimates released by Addison Northwest School District officials for Town Meeting Day reports late in January show lower rates in four of the five ANWSD towns than originally projected earlier last month.
