Warm November set some all-time records

ADDISON COUNTY — For those Addison County residents who felt November was unseasonably warm, it wasn’t a figment of their imaginations. Last month was truly record breaking.

According to data documented by National Weather Service observers:

  South Lincoln had its warmest November on record, with a monthly average of 40.8 degrees. The second warmest November in South Lincoln weather history was in 2006 at 40.3 degrees.

Monkton proposes new building for town offices, library

MONKTON — Officials in Monkton say they’ve exceeded the capacity of their 1,200-square-foot town hall. According to the 2010 census, Monkton is one of Addison County’s fastest growing towns, expanding at a rate of 12.6 percent in the last decade to a total of 1,980 residents.

Ex-Bristol planning chair reflects on term, resignation

BRISTOL — When chairman Tom Wells resigned his position on the Bristol Planning Commission last Wednesday after eight years serving on the commission and four years heading it, the decision didn’t come as a big surprise to the selectboard.

According to selectboard Chair Joel Bouvier, Wells indicated in early October he’d likely have trouble fulfilling his planning commission duties due to an increased workload as an attorney.

'Jingle Bell Jane'

“JINGLE BELL JANE,” an acrylic painting by Joan MacKenzie, is part of the Bristol gallery Art on Main’s featured artist exhibit, “Festive & Fanciful,” which opens with a reception Friday evening. The show includes MacKenzie’s whimsical paintings as well as luxurious embossed velvet stockings, scarves and pillows by Tausha Sylver.

Retailers see quick start to the holidays

ADDISON COUNTY — Over the past few years, Addison County retailers have been battered by a nationwide recession, stiff competition from the Internet, stressed household budgets and, this year, the crippling effects of Tropical Storm Irene.

But many local shop owners are cautiously optimistic about the holiday shopping season that they say kicked off with a bang this past weekend.

Bristol planning chair Wells resigns

BRISTOL — Bristol Planning Commission Chair Tom Wells resigned on Wednesday after eight years serving on the commission and four years heading it.

This decision comes after Wells missed the past three meetings for work-related reasons. It also comes after Vice-chair Chico Martin, leading the Nov. 15 planning commission meeting in Wells’ absence, potentially violated the state open meeting law when he refused to let a member of the public ask a question.

Irene repairs offer chance to really fix infrastructure

ADDISON COUNTY — As Tim Bouton, emergency response planner for the Addison County Regional Planning Commission, made his local rounds after Tropical Storm Irene, he urged towns to drastically rethink their roads, public buildings and other infrastructure and get them out of the flood plain.

ANeSU seeks input on how to get local foods into schools

BRISTOL — Bristol-area school administrators are looking for people who are interested in their schools’ food systems, wish to see more local foods in public schools or think food education is important.

Addison Northeast Supervisory Union administrators are seeking input from these people and all members of the public as the ANeSU aims to restructure the food system of all six of its schools.

Mt. Abe students aim to curb risky behavior

BRISTOL — Local teenagers are taking risky business into their own hands, aiming to rein in teen substance abuse and other hazardous behaviors.

After the Vermont Department of Health earlier this month released the results of this year’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) — a biennial look at everything from teen sex to bullying — a taskforce of Mount Abraham Union middle and high school students spent a day analyzing the Bristol school’s results.
