ADDISON COUNTY — After two years of relatively strong milk prices, the United States Department of Agriculture last week announced that falling dairy prices and the high cost of feed has triggered support payments to dairy farmers.

Nurses see need for local foods at school

VERGENNES — Health care workers at the Stone Soup Conference in Vergennes last Tuesday agreed that increasing nutritious, local foods in schools needs to be a priority.

“There are some huge nutrition problems,” said Mary Gill, school nurse at Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury. “They have a huge impact on students’ ability to learn.”

Locals eye future of county farm-to-school efforts

VERGENNES — On Tuesday evening, voices in farm-to-school efforts across the county joined together to create a “stone soup” of ideas for bringing local foods into the cafeteria and the classroom.

The event was the third and final Stone Soup Conference, this oneat Vergennes Union High School, put on by the Addison County Relocalization Network.

MCTV plans digital future with Ilsley

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Community Television (MCTV) and Ilsley Public Library are becoming more and more aligned in seeking to not only distribute published content, but to help people create and distribute their own content.

“We’re looking to the future, and we’re seeing our missions converge more and more,” MCTV Executive Director Dick Thodal said following the Middlebury nonprofit’s annual meeting at the Ilsley Thursday night.

Legislators, citizens debate farm issues

BRIDPORT — At a lunch meeting in Bridport last Monday, local legislators participated in a lively conversation with constituents on agricultural issues.

Three legislators — Rep. Will Stevens, I-Shoreham; Rep. Harvey Smith, R-New Haven; and Sen. Harold Giard, D-Bridport — discussed the Working Lands bill, migrant farmworkers, genetically modified crops and a variety of other agricultural topics. The meeting was sponsored by the Bridport Grange and the Addison County Farm Bureau.

Sugaring season drawing to a close

ADDISON COUNTY — After a banner maple syrup spring in 2011, county sugarmakers this week were facing an early end to this year’s season.

Tim Hescock of Vermont Trade Winds Farm in Shoreham said this year he tapped his 2,200 trees earlier than usual and began boiling 19 days early. As of last Friday his season was over.

On Tuesday, Hescock said the prolonged high temperatures this week likely would end any chance of more sap flowing in Addison County maples.

Students join forces in sweet enterprise

WEYBRIDGE — Students at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury have been hard at work on a new maple sugaring operation for the past year, and this spring it finally began to show results.

With a design by the architecture class, and building by the construction class, a sugarhouse has grown up just below the school’s 330-tree sugarbush in Weybridge since September 2010. This winter, the Forestry and Natural Resources class spent hours installing taps, setting up state-of-the-art equipment and boiling sap.

Teachers call off strike in Orwell district

ORWELL — Early Wednesday morning, school boards in the Addison Rutland Supervisory Union (ARSU) and representatives of the district’s teachers’ union reached a tentative contract agreement, averting a threatened teachers’ strike that day.

Orwell Village School board chair Glen Cousineau, who said both sides agreed to keep details of the agreement private until it is ratified, was relieved by the breakthrough.

Vermont Gas refines its county pipeline plans

VERGENNES/MIDDLEBURY — At meetings in Vergennes and Middlebury last week, Vermont Gas representatives updated the public on a plan to bring a natural gas pipeline to those locales by the fall of 2015.

Don Gilbert, Vermont Gas president, said the project would bring to Addison County an energy source that is cheaper and cleaner than oil or propane. The company already provides natural gas — which can power stoves and heating and cooling systems — to more than 40,000 customers in Chittenden and Franklin counties.

Orwell teachers prepared to strike this week

ORWELL — Contract negotiations in the Addison-Rutland Supervisory Union are coming down to the wire, as teachers in that district announced on Friday that they would strike if school boards do not return to the table and reach a settlement by Wednesday.

Teachers in ARSU, which includes Orwell, Benson, Castleton and Fair Haven, have been working without a contract since July 2011 and are in the 15th month of negotiations on a new contract, having so far failed to reach a compromise. The supervisory union has imposed a pay freeze.
