Bye bye, bridge

6:30 on Monday morning was dark, the roads slick and the air icy. There was no reason to be up so early. Well, no reason but a bridge demolition.

Which was why John Flowers, Trent Campbell and I were already on our way out to Addison, cameras and notebooks in hand to cover the last moments of the Champlain Bridge. The bridge wasn't scheduled to blow until 10, but we were hoping for a parking space at the Bridge Restaurant, right at the heart of the action.

Table Talk: A season for giving

When I think of the holidays, I think of lots of relatives gathered around the dinner table, enjoying the company, the occasion, and an indulgent meal. It's a time when normal food rules are suspended, the dieters, fitness freaks and food-obsessed alike using the occasion to try some of everything. (Why, yes, I'll have some of Grandma's cookies, but not without a side of Uncle Morgan's pumpkin pie…)

Plus, as an added perk, I get to stop obsessing about how much each serving is costing me or how many meals I'll get out of whatever I'm making and just enjoy the food.

State suspends Quesnel Livestock license

MIDDLEBURY — On Dec. 16, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets suspended the dealer license of Middlebury livestock dealers Bernard and Louis Quesnel, who do business as Quesnel Livestock. The suspension comes at the end of a nearly month-long agency investigation of Quesnel Livestock for possession of improperly documented horses on their Route 7 North property.

Goshen gets technology grant, and other news from around the region

GOSHEN — In August, Goshen received a $2,985 grant from the Help America Vote Act. Since the act passed in 2005, the federal government has awarded the grants to states annually. Its purpose is to make elections more accessible to voters and to allow the town to communicate more easily with other towns and the state come the next election.

Suite of nutcrackers makes collector proud

MIDDLEBURY — This holiday season, the view through the window of one Middlebury home isn’t just holiday lights. Instead, in the biggest windowsill in the Hathaway house off Halladay Road, 88 nutcrackers of all shapes and sizes are already on display.

Cullen Hathaway, a seventh-grader at Middlebury Union Middle School, owns the large collection. Every December, the 12-year-old pulls the nutcrackers out of their storage boxes in the attic and sets them out on the windowsill.

Teen preps for semester outside

EAST MIDDLEBURY — As the New Year begins, many people will be turning up the heat in their homes and enjoying the outdoors through the nearest window.

But this winter, Kendra Dempewolff of East Middlebury will spend her days living outdoors — skiing and canoeing the wilderness of New Hampshire and Vermont, sleeping in a handmade cotton tent and making many of the things she needs to survive. She, along with 10 others, is gearing up for Jan. 6, the beginning of a five-month-long program with New Hampshire-based Kroka Expeditions.

Opening of the Champlain Bridge

On August 26, 1929, Allen Beach recorded silent video footage of the opening of the Champlain Bridge. Now, 80 years later, officials say that the bridge will be demolished within the month. View footage of the bridge opening below, and read the related article here.

Vigil raises flag on climate change

MIDDLEBURY — On Monday night, 15 Middlebury College students and community members huddled in a windswept circle in front of the college library. The candles they held flickered and went out almost as soon as they lit them, but soon a handful of battery-operated candles surfaced. These stayed lit against the biting wind.
