McKibben calls protest a success

WASHINGTON, D.C. — To Ripton resident Bill McKibben, the best measure of success in the two-week Tar Sands Action protest in front of the White House was the 1,253 arrests of protesters.

People concerned about global climate change flocked to the Washington, D.C., from across the nation for a two-week protest that drew to an end Sept. 3, with 243 arrests happening on that final day, according to tarsandsaction.org.

Internet played a big role in flood response

VERMONT — As heavy rains and high winds from Tropical Storm Irene roared through Vermont on Aug. 28, local emergency teams, news outlets and state disaster management officials sought to keep up with incident after incident happening across the state.

But as roads washed out, power went down and travel throughout the state became increasingly difficult, Internet technology and social media stepped into the spotlight.

State declares produce from storm-drenched fields unsafe

ADDISON COUNTY — As Tropical Storm Irene dropped a deluge of water across Vermont on Aug. 28, the late-season crops on Gildrien Farm’s River Road property in New Haven surrendered to chest-high water from the New Haven River.

Days later, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture issued the death knell for those crops left standing: Due to food safety concerns, no crops touched by floodwaters from the storm may be sold for human consumption.

Crippling storm unites valley

HANCOCK/GRANVILLE — “Look, headlights,” shouted someone in the crowd gathered at the Hancock Town Hall late Wednesday afternoon.

Every one of the 70-some town residents at the impromptu town meeting turned to look, craning their necks and inching out of their seats to catch a view of the bright orange Central Vermont Public Service truck rolling through town.

Staff Blog: Green Mountain National Forest closed indefinitely

If your Labor Day holiday plans involved a hike in the Green Mountain National Forest, you'll probably want to start looking for an alternate weekend activity.

That's because on Thursday, forest officials ordered the entire 400,000 acre expanse closed indefinitely for health and safety reasons, with the threat of fines or imprisonment for anyone caught entering onto forest land.

Hancock recovers

Unusually heavy rain falls in a short period

VERMONT — Even before the rain ended late Sunday night, Gov. Peter Shumlin declared the flooding likely the worst since November of 1927, when torrential rains caused flooding, destruction and deaths across the state.

Farms face second big setback of the season

ADDISON COUNTY — The floodwaters that covered fields in the wake of the rain and wind from Tropical Storm Irene on Sunday were strangely reminiscent of the high waters that covered fields this spring, pushing seasonal planting back by a month for some.

And Irene, which was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm as it headed north, decimated agricultural fields in some areas of Vermont and, for many others, threw hopes of a late fall growing season into question.

Eastern county towns hit hard, left isolated after roads destroyed

GRANVILLE/HANCOCK — As most Addison County residents turned to recovery and repairs early this week, many Granville and Hancock residents were still trying to make do without phones, electricity and passable roads.

The only two Addison County towns on the eastern slope of the Green Mountains were among the communities hit hardest when Tropical Storm Irene dumped a massive amount of rain on Vermont Sunday.

While communication to some towns is still difficult and the full extent of the damage is still not yet tallied, people across the state are in need of housing, food, supplies and help rebuilding.
