Feb. 19 – Feb. 23 is National FFA Week 

Students who take part in FFA at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center are eager to dispel myths and rumors about their beloved organization. In an article for the Career Center’s biweekly newsletter, “The Trade,” chapter leaders created a brief FAQ to educate the community and help increase interest and awareness of the opportunities FFA provides:

MUHS girls' hockey splits a pair of games

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team split two games last week and stand at 5-11 heading into the last week of action. The Tigers enter the week unofficially at No. 7 in the 10-team field. If they emerge with a No. 7 or 8 seed they should host a postseason play-in game, probably next Wednesday, before hitting the road for a quarterfinal.

From the rink: Middlebury boys post key victories

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team won twice last week to improve to 11-6-1 and unofficially nail down at least the No. 6 seed for the upcoming Division I playoffs as the Tigers enter the regular season’s final week. That seed should ensure MUHS will host a first-round game.

In high school girls' basketball: Mt. Abe and VUHS both win

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham topped Middlebury to highlight local girls’ basketball in the latter half of last week. In other action the Vergennes girls ended a losing streak, while the Middlebury and Otter Valley girls each lost on the road.

The new owner of the historic building renovated the space with a remodeled classroom that is larger, brighter and equipped with new teaching technologies. The Middlebury center serves roughly 400 students each year.

Vermont designer/weaver Elinor Steele Friml will display examples representing 40 years of dedication to the art of contemporary hand-woven tapestry. The exhibit will include works from several of her series, including abstract and impressionistic images, landscapes and geometric compositions.

Civil War Heritage Trail is taking shape

ADDISON COUNTY — After years of planning, the Vermont in the Civil War Heritage Trail is taking shape along the Route 7 corridor from Bennington to the Canadian border. The trail was born out of a desire to link key American Civil War sites in the Green Mountain State — museums, historic sites, exhibits and more — and educate by making this important history more unified and accessible.

Howard Coffin’s 2013 book “Something Abides: Discovering the Civil War in Today’s Vermont” has served as a reference and inspiration for the trail.
