Middlebury Police Log: Fight draws assault citation

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Eli Madden, 40, of Middlebury for simple assault, following their investigation of a reported fight between two men at the intersection of Main Street and Merchants Row on July 6. One of those involved was taken to Porter Hospital for treatment of a head injury, according to police.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Took a drunken, local man into protective custody on July 1.

Elm Street in Middlebury to be closed on Tuesday

MIDDLEBURY — Elm Street in Middlebury will be closed on Tuesday, July 9, between North Pleasant Street and Seymour Street for the replacement of a failing private sanitary sewer line with a new sewer line. Town officials said the street must be closed to connect the new sewer line with the town’s sewer main, which is under the paved section of Elm Street.

There will be traffic control personnel at each end of the closed section to assist with traffic.

Community Rowing Club to compete in world championship

FERRISBURGH — Members of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s (LCMM) Community Rowing Club will be heading to Ullapool, Scotland, in early July to participate in the inaugural St. Ayles Skiff World Championship. Over 30 teams from Scotland, England, Tasmania, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the United States are registered to participate in the weeklong competition and community event. LCMM was invited to participate in this international competition as winners of the 2012 St. Ayles Championship held in Mystic, Conn., last June.

Festival on-the-Green keeps Middlebury humming this week

MIDDLEBURY — The green in downtown Middlebury is a happening place this week as the venue for the Middlebury Summer Festival on-the-Green celebrating its 35th Season from July 7-13.

The week opened on Sunday evening with the Brooklyn-based Lake Street Dive. The four-piece ensemble pleased the crowd with two sets of soulful pop music on a beautiful evening under the tent next to St. Stephen’s church.

Middlebury College student killed in R.I. crash

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury College student died in an automobile accident in Rhode Island just after 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 29. Ian Cameron, 24, a senior sociology and psychology major, was thrown from his vehicle after his car hit a guardrail and flipped. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

A resident of East Greenwich, R.I., Cameron planned to complete his studies at Middlebury after the upcoming fall semester.

Winners in summer's first triathlon post blazing times

SALISBURY — Thirty-one-year-old Jason Frank of Burlington became only the ninth triathlete, out of more than 15,000 entrants over 29 years, to break one hour in winning the Vermont Sun Triathlon, which was contested June 30 at and around Branbury State Park in Salisbury.

Frank completed the 600-yard swim, 14-mile bike and 3.1-mile run in 59 minutes and 45 seconds.

Former winner Chris Coffey of New Haven turned in a great race with a 1:01:32 finish to take second.

Family fetes 200 years in New Haven home

NEW HAVEN — Beverly Marshall Landon and her kin go back a long way in New Haven. She and family members gathered at the Fitts/Farr homestead at 730 River Road on June 5 to celebrate ownership of the stately white farmhouse for exactly 200 years.

Landon’s great-great-great-great-grandfather Simon Farr purchased the property from Ruloff Lawrence, who lived in Middlebury, for $3,000.

Vergennes Police Log: Police affected by fumes during search

VERGENNES — A Vergennes officer and an Addison County Sheriff’s Department deputy both experienced disturbing symptoms during a June 24 traffic stop on Route 7 in New Haven, according to Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel and city department records.

The deputy called for backup from Vergennes police at the stop because of what Merkel described as “the smell of burnt pot” and “a faint chemical odor.”

Vermont State Police Log: Troopers seek information on burglaries

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police received several reports of home burglaries in Addison County this past week.

The week started on June 25 when troopers at the New Haven barracks received a report of a burglary at an unsecured home in the Echo Road neighborhood in Ferrisburgh that day. Two nail guns worth a total of $400 and a Sharp 36-inch flat screen TV worth $900 were reported stolen.
