Women's hockey wins two out of three

CLINTON, N.Y. — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team blanked host NESCAC foe Hamilton twice this past weekend to remain unbeaten and in first place in the league, but then dropped a non-league game to Norwich on Tuesday.

The Panthers, winners of six straight, are 11-4-3 overall and 7-0-3 in NESCAC action heading into a pair of games at Colby this weekend. They were ranked No. 6 in this week’s NCAA Division III poll.

Panther women's hoop splits contests

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team split two recent games, working overtime to win a league game on Saturday before dropping a non-league contest on Tuesday. The Panthers (11-8, 3-3 NESCAC) will visit Colby and Bowdoin this weekend.

On Saturday, the Panthers outscored visiting league foe Hamilton by 13-3 in overtime to earn a 75-65 win and even their league mark at 3-3. Hamilton fell to 6-13, 1-5 in NESCAC play.

MIddlebury Police Log: Student helps lead police to stolen laptop

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury College student on Jan. 31 provided a valuable assist to state and local authorities who were able to find his property and other items allegedly stolen from campus.

Middlebury police received a report that a MacBook laptop computer had been stolen from a college student. The student was able to trace his stolen device to a North Ferrisburgh address, according to police.

Vergennes Police Log: Police deal with family disputes, unruly customers

VERGENNES — Vergennes police between Jan. 25 and 31 dealt with a variety of incidents, including a family dispute, a possible case of driving under the influence of drugs, a jewelry theft, and an unruly drugstore customer.

In those seven days, Vergennes police:

•  On Jan. 25 helped a car owner get into a locked vehicle on Monkton Road.

•  On Jan. 25 checked the welfare of a Main Street woman on behalf of a friend; she was found to be OK.

Vermont State Police Log: Icy conditions result in several accidents

ADDISON COUNTRY — Snowfall on Friday, Jan. 29, resulted in some traffic crashes that kept Vermont State Police busy.

Police said the weather changed from light snow to heavy, wet snow with local accumulations of two inches on Route 22A during that morning. At around 10:30 a.m., troopers were called to Route 22A at the Bridport-Shoreham line for several vehicles that had slid off the roadway. They investigated three crashes involving tractor-trailers.

Bristol Police Log: Police received skills training in December

BRISTOL — During December, Bristol police officers took part in training four times, according to a recently released log for that month. That training included a refresher course in National Information Based Reporting Systems, an online testing certification to remain compliant with the NCIC national crime database, and eight hours of training on interacting with people experiencing mental health issues. Bristol Chief Kevin Gibbs took part in a training session for chiefs and the sheriff held at the Middlebury Inn.

Exhibit of Eastern art at Jackson Gallery celebrates Spring

MIDDLEBURY — The Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury is currently showing “Return of the Spring,” an exhibition featuring the work of Middlebury artist Yinglei Zhang; her mentor, Mr. Li Xubai from China, currently living in Canada; and her teacher Mr. Guo Ziyu of Hong Kong. Both Li and Guo have work collected by private owners and museums around the world.

Shoreham to hold forum on Act 46 issues

SHOREHAM — What would it mean if Shoreham residents voted to join in with other towns in the Addison Central Supervisory Union in a unified school district as proscribed by Act 46?

Shoreham residents are invited to come find out and ask questions this Thursday morning at an event called “Shoreham Community Forum: School District Unification Act 46.”

The forum will take place at Platt Memorial Library beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4.

Working artists to offer their insights in a Q&A on Friday

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center will moderate a panel discussion, “Three Artists in the Working Forest: Conversation on Art, Documentary, and Representation with Kathleen Kolb, Verandah Porche, and George Bellerose,” on Friday, Feb. 5, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Vision & Voice Gallery in Middlebury.

The panel conversation and Q&A session will seek to illuminate how these three working artists approach the representation of their subjects from the vantage point of artistic creators, storytellers and ethnographers.
