Local children's book author to speak at Vermont Book Shop this Sunday

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont author and illustrator Deirdre Gill will present the new book she illustrated, “Trains Don’t Sleep,” on Sunday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m., at Vermont Book Shop in Middlebury.

As part of Children’s Book Week, Gill will read the book, discuss how she made the illustrations, and then draw and show some of the sketches she did to make the book. The event is free and open to the public.

The book, written by Andria Rosenbaum, is targeted for children ages 4-8:

Community Chorus to present 'Spring Awakening' this weekend

BRANDON & MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College Community Chorus takes to the stage in Brandon and Middlebury this weekend in May for its “Spring Awakening” concert. Performances take place at the Brandon Town Hall on Saturday evening, May 6, 7:30 p.m., and at the Robison Concert Hall, Mahaney Center for the Arts in Middlebury on Sunday afternoon, May 7, 3 p.m.

Vermont walleye season opens this Saturday

RUTLAND, — The Vermont walleye fishing season is set to open on Saturday, May 6, marking the return of some of the best walleye fishing in New England.

Vermont has excellent spring walleye fishing opportunities in a number of lakes and rivers across the state including Lake Champlain and its tributaries — the Missisquoi, Lamoille and Winooski rivers and Otter Creek — as well as Salem Lake, Island Pond, Clyde Pond and the Clyde River.

Vermont State Police Log: Falling rocks cause car crash

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police responded to a 911 call this past Friday night, April 28, a little before midnight of a one-car rollover crash on Route 125 in Ripton near the Middlebury town line.

When troopers arrived on the scene, fire and rescue personnel were already on scene and told police that the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, 29-year-old Charles W. Desjadon of Ripton, had already been transported to Porter Hospital for treatment of cuts on his head.

Bristol Police Log: Man runs from crash after high-speed chase

BRISTOL — At half past midnight on April 11, a Bristol police officer tried to stop a vehicle for defective equipment, but the driver sped off southbound on Route 116 south of the village.

The officer pursued the vehicle onto River Road, where the vehicle went off the roadway. The driver was able to get the vehicle back onto the roadway and drove back toward Route 116, where it turned southbound.

The officer continued pursuit at speeds of over 100 miles per hour, according to a Bristol police report.

Middlebury construction company announces management changes

MIDDLEBURY, — Bread Loaf Corporation recently announced the arrival of Karen Oakman, who has joined their MEP department as a MEP Manager. Oakman holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Union College, and brings with her more than 25 years of experience, including owning her own engineering firm from 1991-2013.

House considering green burial minimum depth

MIDDLBEURY — The House has just passed bill H.3 in the Vermont Legislature. The bill establishes a minimum depth of 3.5 feet for green burial, a depth which maximizes the impact of the body to enrich the soil. Governor Scott is expected to sign the bill into law next week.

Michelle Acciavatti, citizen advocate for H.3 and end-of-life specialist, will be in Middlebury to speak about green burial on Thursday, May 11, at 7 p.m., at Champlain Valley Unitarian Society, 2 Duane Ct.,  in Middlebury

One World Library to feature two migrant farmworker outreach programs

BRISTOL — As we are reminded by recent events, Vermont’s economy depends on the support of migratory agricultural workers. On Thursday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m., Julia Doucet and Naomi Wolcott-MacCausland will present “Supporting Vermont’s Migrant Farmworkers: Huertas Project and El Viaje Mas Caro”a presentationabouttwo programs designed to address the unique needs of this population. The event is hosted by the One World Library Project and will take place at the Lawrence Memorial Library at 40 North Street in Bristol.
