Middlebury Police Log: Ripton man cited for possession

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Eric Manning, 40, of Ripton for possession of marijuana, following a traffic stop on Route 7 South on Feb. 20.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Assisted in the search of an 8-year-old child who had walked away from a babysitter in the Seymour Street neighborhood on Feb. 19. Police said the child was found and returned home.

•  Responded to the reported theft of a bracelet from a College Street residence on Feb. 19.

Vergennes Police Log: Car thefts and break-ins keep police busy

VERGENNES — Vergennes police are investigating 14 incidents of car thefts or break-ins throughout the city between Feb. 18 and 21, and are asking anybody who might have seen anything suspicious to call them at 877-2201.

Police are especially curious about two teens, one male and one female, who were seen during one Feb. 18 incident. That evening at about 10:30 p.m. a resident found a girl smoking a cigarette in his truck, after which she and a male companion fled the scene on foot. The resident then discovered, according to police, his truck had been ransacked.

Three indicted in Hancock meth case

BURLINGTON —Michael Wood, 45, and Steven Arnold, 20, both of Hancock, pled not guilty in United States District Court on Tuesday to an indictment charging conspiracy to manufacture and distribute five grams or more of methamphetamine. United States Magistrate Judge John M. Conroy ordered Wood detained pending trial and scheduled a detention hearing on Feb. 28 for Arnold.

New Haven native gets his Marine pilot's wings

NEW HAVEN / PENSACOLA, Fla. — Tyler McGuire, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, on Jan. 25 received his helicopter pilot wings at Whiting Naval Air Station, Florida, near Pensacola.

Present were McGuire’s parents, Ed and Mary McGuire of New Haven, as well as his oldest brother, Matthew McGuire of Malvern, Pa., and his Uncle Jack and Aunt Sharon McGuire of Winter Park, Fla.

Kramer joins Langrock, Sperry

MIDDLEBURY/BURLINGTON — Katherine “Katie” B. Kramer has joined Langrock Sperry & Wool LLP as an associate, working primarily on litigation matters.

Prior to joining the firm, Kramer clerked for Chief Judge Christina Reiss of the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont, and for the Honorable Andrew Guilford of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. In addition, she practiced for two years at a large New York law firm where she focused on commercial litigation, and received the firm’s Pro Bono Distinction award.

Early morning fire destroys Monkton horse barn

MONKTON — Police are looking for help in determining the origin of a fire that consumed a horse barn in Monkton early Sunday morning.

At approximately 3 a.m. on Feb. 24 the Monkton Fire Department responded to a fire at 271 White Ridge Lane in Monkton. The fire was reported after a Monkton resident saw an “orange glow” in the area of White Ridge Lane.

Panther skiers third at winter carnival

HANCOCK/RIPTON — The Panther ski team finished in third place this past weekend at the 90th annual Middlebury College winter carnival. Vermont won the event with 933 points, followed by Dartmouth (859), Middlebury (766) and New Hampshire (734).

Vermont State Police Log: Addison burglary under investigation

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are investigating the Feb. 15 burglary of a home on Jersey Street in Addison during which the culprit stole a variety of personal property, plus items with the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife insignia. Police said the stolen items — a Deputy F&W badge, collar brass and a tie clip — belong to one of the victims, Deputy Warden Eugene Stearns.

The total value of the stolen property is estimated at $8,000, according to police.

Vergennes Police Log: Overdose may lead to charges

VERGENNES — Police said drug charges are possible following a Feb. 12 North Main Street incident in which they responded to help Vergennes Area Rescue Squad personnel deal with a man who was apparently overdosing on a drug.

Police said when they drove up a man and a woman were outside their car, and the man was obviously ailing. Police allege he admitted he was having a bad reaction to some heroin he had taken, and VARS took him to Porter Hospital.
