New Aurora Learning Center offers wide array of after-school activities

MIDDLEBURY — Aurora Learning Center, a community education and recreation center, opened September 18 at 238 Peterson Terrace in Middlebury. Aurora Learning Center (ALC) is now the principal business of The Aurora School, Inc., a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that operated Aurora School from 1996 to 2017.

During after school hours (3:00 to 5:30), ALC will host recreational activities led by educators or talented community members. ALC will charge a fee for each activity. The fees will be in the range of $15 to $25 per participant for each session.

Building Bright Futures to host tours of county's early learning programs

ADDISON COUNTY — As a means of exploring early learning options in the county, Addison County Building Bright Futures has set up a series of visits to early care and learning programs throughout the region. The tours will take place Oct. 2-5. Each visit will include a 20-minute tour, and conversation with staff. A post-visit panel discussion and luncheon on Oct. 5 will provide participants the opportunity to discuss what they saw and to generate ideas for the continuing improvement of early learning in Addison County.

Ilsley expands archive of films from New Filmmakers Festival

MIDDLEBURY — The next installment of donated Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival films has arrived at Ilsley Public Library and is now available for viewing by library card holders. MNFF has donated an additional 30 films to the library, growning its archive to more than 50 films. The donation is comprised of BluRay format films that were screened during the 2nd Annual event in the summer of 2016.

Little Free Library opens in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The first Little Free Library in Middlebury is up and running at 91 Main Street. You can take a book or leave a book or just stop by to browse. You will find this “little book box” in front of Middlebury Eye Associates Inc. The library is always open. Little Free Libraries work on the honor system of free books for anyone who is interested. They are a community resource for everyone to enjoy.

Bixby to offer variety of writing programs

VERGENNES — Bixby Memorial Library will offer a full plate of writing programs this fall and winter that promises to take writings from idea to a finished draft. A new class from local educator and writer A. Jay Dubberly kicks off the program that includes weekly workshops, monthly table read events, dedicated writing periods, and more hosted by the Vergennes library.

Help track Vermont's 11 snake species

MIDDLEBURY — Biologists are asking the public to report snake sightings this fall to the Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas to help document the extent of the state’s 11 snake species.

“Fall is an ideal time to see snakes as they move to their winter den sites,” said Jim Andrews, coordinator of the Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas.  “Vermont’s snakes can be identified by their wide variety of patterns and markings, which can be quite beautiful.”

Arts grants available to programs serving kids in 5-towns area

BRISTOL — 5-Town Friends of the Arts (5-TFA), is now accepting grant applications for its fall round of community grants.  The Community Grants program helps to fund experiences and events in the fine arts, performing arts, history, and other cultural experiences to enrich the lives of people living in Monkton, New Haven, Bristol, Lincoln and Starksboro.

Bohjalian, Sharrow selected for Governor's Arts Award

MONTPELIER — Two local folks will be among the recipients of the 2017 Governor’s Arts Awards. These awards, selected by the Vermont Arts Council, are presented annually to recognize outstanding individual and organizational contributions to the arts. Awards are given to educators, artists, performers, advocates, administrators, volunteers, and scholars. In 2017, Vermonters will be recognized for their contributions in five categories.

Baker & Tarpage Dance Project comes to Middlebury this weekend

The transnational performance group Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project (BTDP) — based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and Philadelphia, Penn. — will draw from Africanist and postmodernist aesthetics to present “Declassified Memory Fragment” on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30, 8 p.m., at the Mahaney Center for the Arts in Middlebury. This dance theatre work with live music is inspired by memory, history, and images of the political and cultural realities currently affecting the continent of Africa.

Willowell hosts benefit for AIDS Awareness Theater this weekend

Have you ever been to an Ethiopian Boogie Benefit? Didn’t think so. Well now’s your chance. This Saturday, Sept. 30, at Burnham Hall in Lincoln, the Monkton-based Willowell Foundation will present an evening of Ethiopian food prepared by local Ethiopian chefs, arts and crafts recently brought back from Ethiopia and music by New Nile Orchestra.
