American Legion in Bristol honors two for excellence

BRISTOL — During this month’s annual Legion Birthday Dinner in Bristol, Commander Ron LaRose presented the annual Above and Beyond Awards to Brenda Boutin of Starksboro and Jim Rivers of Bristol.

Boutin was nominated by Jan McCleery for her exceptional volunteer work for the Starksboro Senior Meal Program. She spends many hours procuring food and product donations that she uses to prepare the meals and desserts for all that attend. The number of people served at this monthly meal has increased to 45.

Families race at Bread Loaf Nordic ski area

RIPTON — A crisp and sunny but windy day accompanied 40 skiers out of the mass start area and onto the Tormondsen Family Race Trail for the annual Bread Loaf Citizens’ Race at Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton on March 17. Participants ranged in ages from 6.75 (Greta Jennison) up to 70.

Area Special Olympians compete in Winter Games

WOODSTOCK — Athletes from Special Olympics Addison County competed in the winter games at Suicide Six in Woodstock on Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10. On Friday evening the Woodstock Rotary hosted the opening ceremonies that were attended by Gov. Peter Shumlin. The torch to open the games was carried in by members of the Woodstock Police Department. Opening ceremonies were capped off by a fireworks display high above the village green on Mt. Tom.

BRANDON — Brandon native Stacey S. Coburn was recently crowned Mrs. Vermont United States 2013. Coburn will represent married women across Vermont as she competes for the national title of Mrs. United States in Las Vegas in July.

College hires former Olympian to coach Nordic skiing

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury College skier and two-time U.S. Olympian Andrew Johnson has been named the new head coach of the Nordic ski program at Middlebury College. Johnson comes to Middlebury from the University of Vermont, where he served as an assistant coach for the past three years and helped the Catamounts win the 2012 NCAA title.

Johnson said he welcomes the move back to Middlebury.

Vergennes youth wrestlers are seeing success

MILTON — Ten Vergennes Area Youth Wrestling Club members won titles this past weekend at a Milton tournament as what club organizers said has been a successful season for the organization continued.

Club membership has grown to 53, and 46 wrestlers competed this past weekend at Milton. There, the team also won the tournament’s sportsmanship award, as voted by the event’s referees and other competing clubs.

As well as the 10 first-place finishes at Milton, Vergennes youth wrestlers earned nine second-place results and 14 third-place showings.

Middlebury Police Log: Woman cited for DUI after roll-over accident

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Talena Jestice, 36, of Middlebury for driving under the influence, following investigation of a one-car roll-over accident on Foote Street on March 22.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Referred, to the Addison County State’s Attorney’s office for possible prosecution, a report of a man pushing a woman in the Buttolph Drive area on March 18.

•  Investigated a disorderly conduct complaint in the Lodge Road neighborhood on March 18.

Vergennes Police Log: Cars towed due to winter parking ban

VERGENNES — Last week’s snowy weather resulted in Vergennes police ticketing and/or ordering towed a number of cars left on city streets in violation of the city’s wintertime ban on overnight on-street parking.

Police ticketed cars and ordered at least one car towed on the nights of March 18, 19, 20 and 21.

The parking ban will remain in effect through April 1, this coming Monday.
