MIDDLEBURY — In 2017, Change the Story Vermont, a publicly funded initiative to improve women’s economic status in Vermont, reported that just 8 percent of the state’s highest-grossing companies were led by women. This fall, the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies (VCET) is launching a new program it hopes will help change that statistic.

VERGENNES – When Kelly Sweeney moved to Vergennes in 1979, there weren’t a lot of young people — and there weren’t flowers on Main Street.

In fact, she says, businesses struggled to stay open in the historic downtown.

“Now there are dads pushing strollers up and down Main Street and kids in every café. It’s incredible,” says Sweeney.

There are also flowers, lots of flowers.

GOSHEN – For most people, it’s hard to imagine running a full marathon. But for Goshen resident Britta Clark, running an ultra-distance trail race of 50K or more is as natural as stepping out her back door.

Clark is the daughter of Tony Clark and Shari Brown, co-owners of Goshen-based Blueberry Hill Inn and Ski Center. The 24-year-old returned to Goshen this spring after a year-long Fulbright fellowship in New Zealand, where she studied inter-generational justice.

Peter Mackey retires and wife_8110 (1).jpg

MIDDLEBURY — When Peter Mackey learned to ski in the 1950s, the sport looked very different than it does today.

“It was all antiquated leather boots, unsafe bindings and unshaped skis. It was a time when kids climbed up into the backyard and learned to ski at home,” he recalled in a recent interview with the Independent.

Mackey had a front row seat to observe — and take part in — the evolution in skiing as the long-time general manager of the Middlebury College Snow Bowl.

MIDDLEBURY — Eva Shaw grew up ski racing in Vermont, so she knows a thing or two about being cold.
