Maple treats delight at fair

NEW HAVEN –– Each year the inviting scent of warm, sweet maple syrup pulls fairgoers into the Addison County Maple Sugarmakers Association building at Field Days. The sugarhouse is a must-see for most people at the fair, many of whom have a favorite maple treat.

“Everybody has their thing that they like,” said sugarhouse volunteer Maggie Seeley on Tuesday, the first day of Addison County Fair and Field Days. “I come in for the cup of coffee and the doughnut, that’s my thing.”

Family welcomes flood of community support in wake of tragedy

ADDISON COUNTY — When Starksboro’s Jonah Rule, 32, died in a Fayston car crash at the end of June, he left behind his 28-year-old wife Caitlin and two young children, Austin and Callie.

Following the tragic incident, family and friends banded together to help the stay-at-home mother and her kids move forward. The Jonah Rule Memorial Fund was created, an online crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo.com was initiated and numerous fundraisers sprouted up.

Victim's widow: Affidavit errs on phone call

FERRISBURGH — The wife of Conrad Bell, who Vermont State Police allege was killed by a Burlington man at a July 27 bonfire in Ferrisburgh, said one element of the VSP court documents filed on July 30 and then reported in the Independent on Aug. 2 is not accurate.

Laurie Bell, 44, of Vergennes said alleged killer Joseph Bolduc, 25, did not threaten her husband in a July 21 phone call, as described in one VSP affidavit.

Route 17 construction continues

NEW HAVEN/WALTHAM/ADDISON — Those heading to Addison County Fair and Field Days by Route 17 this week will have a bumpy ride.

Construction on the length of road between Route 22A in Addison and Route 7 in New Haven has been under way since June, and the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) estimates it will continue until mid-November.

Bristol gathers to grapple with drug crime

BRISTOL — A noticeable rise in armed robberies, burglaries and drug-related crimes have plagued Bristol this past year.

To identify the problems behind these crimes and find solutions, more than 100 citizens, law enforcement officials and social workers packed into the muggy basement of Bristol’s St. Ambrose Church on Tuesday evening. While police officers did not quantify the increase in local drug activity, those in attendance agreed that Bristol and Addison County have a drug problem, and it’s getting worse.

4-H kids ready animals for star turns at fair

ADDISON COUNTY — 4-H club members around the county were hard at work this week preparing for their biggest event of the year: Addison County Fair and Field Days.

During the week, the 350 4-H members in 18 clubs around the county will show their animals, compete in other events, and demonstrate their ongoing projects. In the lead-up to the next week, members were doing the final grooming and training of the animals that will soon fill the fairgrounds’ barns.

Burlington man charged with Ferrisburgh murder

FERRISBURGH — A Burlington man with ties to Ferrisburgh on Monday was officially charged with second-degree murder for taking the life of Conrad Bell, 40, of Vergennes during a confrontation at a Ferrisburgh bonfire just before midnight on July 27.

At a Monday afternoon arraignment in Rutland Superior Court, Joseph Bolduc, 25, pleaded innocent to that charge as well as a number of other charges stemming from the aftermath of an incident in which Vermont State Police allege Bolduc struck Bell with a tire iron in the neck at least twice and caused his death.
