Hancock trio charged with cooking meth at Route 125 home

MIDDLEBURY/HANCOCK — Three Hancock residents appeared at the Addison County Courthouse on Wednesday, Nov. 21, to plead innocent to drug-related crimes in connection with an alleged methamphetamine operation at a home at 2698 Route 125 in Hancock.

It is the first substantial meth case to be prosecuted in Addison County.

VUHS board to decide on bond at Dec. 10 meeting

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board will meet on Dec. 10 to create a new bond proposal for voter approval, said board chairwoman Kristin Bristow on Wednesday.

Bristow spoke the morning after the board met for two hours in front of about 10 residents to discuss its options after its initial $6.5 million proposal to pay for needed repairs and major upgrades to the school and grounds lost on Election Day, by a tally of 2,244-1,653.

Bristol siblings launch film careers

BRISTOL — For many 20-somethings, moving to New York City to make it as actors and directors is a pipedream.

For siblings Brighton and Sarah Jean Luke, Bristol natives and members of the Mount Abraham Union High School class of 2007, that pipedream isn’t just their reality — it’s also the inspiration for their first film, “American Dreamsicle,” which is currently in production.

Bristol commission back at work on zoning

BRISTOL — “Big cups for a big success!” said Bristol Planning Commission chair Chico Martin, doling out red solo cups of sparkling cider to the planning commissioners, town office staff and newspaper reporter gathered in Holley Hall last Tuesday.

It was the planning commission’s first meeting since the updated Bristol Town Plan, the product of eight years of the effort, passed with 68.7 percent of the vote on Election Day.

Vermont Land Trust, Freidin conserve New Haven open space

NEW HAVEN — Gail Freidin is working with the Vermont Land Trust to donate a conservation easement on 74 acres of her property on Munger Street. The land is a scenic and productive mix of open meadows and forest.

Fifty acres of cropland are used by the nearby Butler dairy farm.

Middlebury imports new Parks and Recreation Department head

MIDDLEBURY — Terri Arnold, 55, had been looking for a new adventure, and now she’s about to relocate cross-country to Middlebury to live it.

The Middlebury selectboard last week appointed Arnold as the town’s new director of parks and recreation. She currently lives in Langley, Washington, where she serves as director of South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District on Whidbey Island.

‘Vacation’ for Peddie means helping others

MIDDLEBURY — Carol Peddie was closing in on her 50th birthday in 2009 and decided it was time to make some changes in her life. One of the biggest changes was in how she would define the word “vacation.” To Peddie, a vacation now means traveling throughout the world improving the lives of strangers less fortunate than she.

Seven decades of carving: Padua, 90, turns wood into stunning art

MIDDLEBURY — Peter Padua hadn’t thought much about testing his artistic abilities until he was a senior in high school in New Jersey. It was 1941, the same year as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and Padua — who enjoyed his wood shop class — thought he would try his hand at his first carving: A mountain deer, her head craned way back as if staring at the stars.

FERRISBURGH — After more than a decade of planning and effort and a few setbacks along the way, the 13-year-old dreams for Ferrisburgh’s Rokeby Museum to become a major Underground Railroad history site and dramatically expand its ability to handle visitors is a giant step closer to reality.

Brandon general contractor Naylor & Breen Builders recently finished a two-story, roughly $1.5 million visitor center on the Route 7 site that will go by the name the Rokeby Museum Underground Railroad Education Center.

ADDISON COUNTY — Will Stevens — a state representative and co-proprietor, with his wife Judy, of Golden Russet Farm — stands in the kitchen of his Shoreham farmhouse, talking to a customer on his landline wall phone. He confirms the produce pick-up schedule, then stops mid-sentence, frowning.

“Hello?” he says, then hangs up with a resigned shrug.
