Many local women live in daily fear of domestic violence

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — “Rose,” an Addison County woman in her 40s, is overcome with dread every time she looks at the calendar.

While life is pretty good right now, each passing day brings her closer to the moment her ex-husband will be released from jail.

Closer to the prospect of being potentially shaken to the core in the dead of night by the terrifying sounds of a pounding fist and bellowing voice at her front door.

Closer to constantly looking over her shoulder for the man she’s been trying to escape from for around two years.

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County candidates running in contested elections for posts in the state Legislature and county government on Nov. 6 have thus far raised a combined total of around $176,000 to fulfill their political aspirations.

It’s already an all-time record for campaign fundraising in Addison County, and the number will undoubtedly swell by the time candidates do their final accounting after the election night confetti has been swept up.

MiddPolice2963.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police got some reinforcements last week from an unlikely source — Ireland.

Actually, Constable Gavin Todd of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) wasn’t there to participate as much as to observe.

Todd’s four-day visit to Middlebury was courtesy of the International Police Association (IPA), an organization that sponsors exchanges between police departments throughout the world in an effort to foster friendship and co-operation among law enforcement officials.

MIDDLEBURY — Da da da dummm… Da da da dummm…. Yup, we all know it: Bethoven’s Fifth — but if that’s all that comes to mind when you think classical music, it’s probably time to update your repertoire. Good thing the Champlain Philharmonic has a concert coming up this Sunday, Oct. 21, 4 p.m., at the Mahaney Center for the Arts in Middlebury.

Come hear what Music Director Matt LaRocca describes as “old-school, gypsy-folk traditional songs put into classical music.”

MIDDLEBURY — Officials at the organization Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects, or HOPE, are renewing their call for food shelf donations that will be critical in feeding Addison County’s low-income residents until locally organized food drives replenish the cupboards later this fall.

Jeanne Montross, executive director of HOPE, first made the pitch in August — a time when food reserves are typically low. Unfortunately, that appeal didn’t resonate as well as Montross had hoped.

Martha Sullivan recalled as Salisbury's 'encyclopedia'

Posted on October 15, 2018 |
By John Flowers

SALISBURY — Whenever people in Salisbury are stumped on a historical fact about their town — whether it be the original location of an old barn or the location of a founding citizen’s grave — they have invariably turned to their human encyclopedia.

“Ask Martha.”

Tragically, Martha Sullivan, owner of one of the longest civic resumes in Addison County, will no longer be able to serve as the go-to source for all things Salisbury.

GuitarGuy2730.jpg

BRISTOL — In 2012, when the University of Vermont dismantled its Centennial Field soccer bleachers, it sold off thousands of feet of weather-beaten redwood planks. Bristol luthier Micah Plante got the chance to pick through about 300 of those planks and selected just eight. Now, slice by 3/32-inch slice and curve by curve, he’s turning the redwood into acoustic and electric guitars.

Middlebury native hiked Long Trail like it was 1917 — in wool knickers

Mike DeBonis’s curiosity got the best of him last summer, when he decided to spend two weeks of his vacation hiking the Long Trail in 1917 style. You know, wearing wool knickers, carrying a pack basket, sleeping under a twine-supported tarp and eating cold, canned fish for breakfast.

Why, you ask? Good question.
