County's United Way seeks to raise $720,000

MIDDLEBURY — The United Way of Addison County is launching its 2014 fund drive this week with a new financial goal, new campaign co-chairs and some new strategies aimed at encouraging more charitable giving at a time when the need for philanthropy is at an all-time high.

Vermonters flock to join McKibben, 350.org at largest climate march ever

NEW YORK CITY — Hundreds of Vermonters on Sunday afternoon joined an estimated 350,000 people on the streets of Manhattan for the People’s Climate March, the largest climate demonstration in U.S. history.

“This is the biggest event any of us will ever be a part of,” said Greg Dennis of Cornwall. “You just got a sense that if we can get this many people out on the streets, we can make leaders pay attention.”

Farms give surplus food to help poor

MIDDLEBURY — Farms throughout Addison County are being tapped for any extra produce that could be stored and used to feed the hungry this winter.

At issue is an up-and-coming gleaning program run under the auspices of the agency called Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects, or HOPE.

Middlebury House candidates give their pitch

MIDDLEBURY — Three of the four candidates in the race for two seats in the Addison-1 House district explained their positions on a host of issues at a candidate forum held Tuesday night at the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury. The forum, which was televised by MCTV and will be aired several times during the next two weeks, was sponsored by the Addison Independent.

NEW HAVEN — A New Haven couple has raised concerns about a solar array that was recently approved — over their objection — for construction near their Dog Team Road home.

This episode and a series of proposed solar projects in town, including one that would be among the largest ever built in Vermont, have many residents wondering what will become of their beautiful views of the landscape.

Trio to brass: keep 40th Army Band intact

MIDDLEBURY — If it weren’t for a federal rule stipulating retirement by age 60, Jim Lanpher, Peter Young and David Ingham would still be performing in the 40th Army Band of the Vermont National Guard.

For them, 117 years of combined service among them really wasn’t enough — they still occasionally show up at band rehearsals, instruments in tow, hoping for an invitation to join in.

UPS Store moves to former Lightning Photo property

Healthy menu nets national kudos for Ferrisburgh school

FERRISBURGH — One day earlier this month, the pungent smell of basil filled the Ferrisburgh Central School’s front hallway.

On other days, students carried into the building baskets of onions, potatoes, or any of a number of other vegetables from the school’s garden, almost all of which are offered to and then eaten by the same kids who have helped plant and pick them.

Group seeks to aid 'disconnected youth' in Addison County

MIDDLEBURY — Representatives of Addison County’s business, human services and education sectors are banding together to tackle one of Vermont’s — and the nation’s — most pressing social and economic quandaries: How to draw into the workforce a growing segment of the population known as “disconnected youth,” citizens between the ages of 16 to 24 who are either unemployed or not in school.
