'Green Team' sees the light in Salisbury

Japanese boats to hit the water at Middlebury College

MIDDLEBURY — The public is invited to the Middlebury College Natatorium on Thursday evening at 6:45 p.m. to see students launch the traditional Japanese boats they have been building this winter.

Following a colorful Shinto ceremony, Middlebury College students will launch two traditional Japanese boats that they have been constructing this month as part of their work for a Winter Term course titled “Building the Japanese Boat.”

Job cuts eyed at Bristol Elementary School

BRISTOL — A proposed Bristol Elementary School budget that would increase spending by 2.76 percent in the next fiscal year is drawing criticism from some faculty and staff who are concerned that it would cut several staff positions and hurt students.

The $4.9 million spending plan, which the school board tentatively signed off on last week, would curb costs in several areas, including by eliminating one faculty position and five non-special education support staff positions.

Bray to chair Senate Natural Resources Committee

NEW HAVEN — Sen. Chris Bray had hoped Senate leadership would appoint him to the Natural Resources and Energy Committee this session. The sophomore senator is an avid outdoorsman and he believes the state’s long history of good environmental stewardship should be perpetuated.

Middlebury College students launch 'Humans of Vermont' project

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College consistently ranks among the top liberal arts institutions in the U.S., and the college prides itself on fostering a close-knit community of students and faculty on its small campus. 

But for seniors Sophie Kligler, Noah Goss-Woliner and Molly Parizeau, this means it is possible for students to go through their studies at Middlebury without learning much about surrounding towns, or meeting regular Vermonters.

“It’s easy to be, especially as a student, stuck in that Middlebury bubble,” Kligler said.

Lazarus building: Going, going, gone...

MIDDLEBURY — Demolition of the Lazarus building at 20 Main St. in downtown Middlebury was substantially completed in a single day — Monday, Jan. 19 — and minor site cleanup activities continued on Tuesday and Wednesday, including the installation of temporary perimeter security fencing.

Printer’s Alley was closed to traffic on Monday, but re-opened, as planned, on Tuesday.

Fire strikes Middlebury home; no injuries reported

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Fire Chief David Shaw believes it was the improper disposal of some woodstove ashes that caused a blaze that did significant damage to a home at 14 Brookside Drive in Middlebury during the evening of Sunday, Jan. 18.

Deadline nears for local candidates

MIDDLEBURY — Incumbent Middlebury selectboard members Dean George, Susan Shashok and Donna Donahue all confirmed last week that they will run re-election on Town Meeting Day, when they could be challenged by candidates who have until 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, to file the necessary petition papers with 30 signatures at the town clerk’s office.

Vermont Gas details cost hike reasons in PSB report

MONTPELIER — In a flurry of filings before the Public Service Board Thursday afternoon, Vermont Gas Systems detailed the cost drivers for the most recent budget increase for Phase I of its Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project.

Company executives argued that the pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes still will bring significant economic benefits to the state, and asked regulators to allow the project to continue.

Local students bring clean water to Ethiopia school

BRISTOL — A preschool in Ethiopia has potable drinking water, thanks to the efforts of two Addison County students half a world away.

Fifth-grader Carter Monk and third-grader Noah Konczal organized a 5K road race to raise money to repair the well at the Negat Kokeb preschool, in Hawassa, Ethiopia.

Konczal got the idea after his teacher at Monkton Central School, Stacey Carter, went to Ethiopia last February with a group of Addison County teachers as part of an exchange program.
