Middlebury eyes 2020 tax holidays to help merchants during rail project

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials will lobby the Legislature for a series of tax holidays during the summer of 2020 to provide a boost to downtown merchants during what’s expected to be the most disruptive period of the major rail bridges project.

Police anxious about pot law enforcement

ADDISON COUNTY — Possession of a small amount of marijuana will become legal in Vermont this Sunday, July 1, and as the date approaches, local law enforcement officials are expressing continued concerns about ambiguities in the new law that could make enforcement and prosecution more difficult.

Infant care in county gets boost from grant; MJCC to expand

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Johnson Children’s Center will soon be able to open its doors to infants thanks to a $24,000 grant from Vermont Birth to Five’s “Make Way for Kids” program.

In 2018, Vermont Birth to Five, an initiative of the Permanent Fund for Vermont’s Children, began its initiative to create 500 new high-quality childcare spaces across the state every year until 2025.

National trail may soon be extended through area

ADDISON COUNTY — Ambitious local hikers may soon have a big new opportunity lying right in their backyards. The U.S. House of Representatives has unanimously passed legislation that would officially extend the North Country National Scenic Trail from Crown Point, N.Y., into Addison County, Vt.

After federal government delay, work finally starts on $260,000 Lincoln playground

LINCOLN — It took excavators only a few hours to dismantle the old Lincoln Community School (LCS) playground last week. The park designed to replace it will require the entire summer to complete.

After a yearlong delay, Potato Hill Park is finally getting built.

A $260,000 project made possible by a $100,000 grant from the Vermont Land and Water Commission Fund, plus matching funds raised by Friends of LCS, Potato Hill Park is designed to be much more than a school playground.

Lakefront airstrip in Panton ready to be reactivated

PANTON — The owner of a private Panton lakefront airstrip that was used informally for decades until he bought the property two years ago is seeking state and federal approval to bring it back to life.

Charles “Chip” Mather, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, is looking for a permit that would allow him and guests to fly in and out of the 1,700-foot-long, grass-covered strip up to 35 times a month.

National survey sheds light on Middlebury's poor cycling infrastructure

MIDDLEBURY — A recent survey evaluating accessibility, safety and enjoyability of biking in cities and towns across the United States made clear that Middlebury’s cycling infrastructure leaves something to be desired.

The PlacesForBikes City Ratings survey, a two-year, data-driven project conducted by the biking advocacy organization PeopleForBikes, awarded each surveyed location an overall score meant to provide a snapshot of quality of cycling life in cities and towns across the U.S.

That was the inspiration for the Middlebury College student’s start-up, Overeasy, a new outdoor clothing brand that grew out of the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies’ and Middlebury College’s Entrepreneur program.
