MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center officials will spend this month reviewing key terms of an agreement that could lead to the organization’s affiliation with the University of Vermont Health Network early this spring.

“Things are going well,” PMC President Fred Kniffin said during a recent affiliation update to the Porter community. “The work is being done in a collaborative, respectful fashion … The ‘feel’ of the growing relationship between PMC and UVMHN is really good. Progress is being made.”

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) officials have approved a 2017 budget of $2,989,316, a plan calling for a 6-percent increase in spending.

The increase reflects — among other things — the launch next July 1 of a new state law calling on waste haulers and transfer stations to offer food scrap collection.

MIDDLEBURY — Freddie and Gladis, Mexican citizens, have worked on Vermont dairy farms since 2010. Last month the couple brought their two-month-old daughter, Charlene, from Stowe, where they live, to Middlebury for the annual visit by officials from the Mexican Consulate of Boston.

They came to get a Mexican birth certificate for the pink-swathed baby, a new service offered by the Mexican diplomats.

The wish for birth certificates was part of a dominant theme at this year’s annual visit from the Mexican Consulate — uncertainty.

n3 Mumbai meets Brandon Tanvi Lonkar SLumdog2_CMYK.jpg

BRANDON — It was 82 degrees in Mumbai, India, on a recent Monday, and it was 12 degrees in Brandon, Vt. To say that Brandon is the polar opposite of Mumbai would be a pun and a truth.

So, why would a 21-year-old college student from Mumbai want to spend three weeks in Brandon?

“I’d never seen snow,” Tanvi Lonkar explained.

Fair enough.

It has snowed several times since she arrived in Brandon, and Lonkar is thrilled.

Middlebury to revisit jobs growth strategy

Posted on December 29, 2016 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters in March will be asked to extend the town’s current economic development office for one more year, instead of the 5-year renewal that officials had originally contemplated. Officials will use the coming year to re-evaluate the grander business growth expectations that the selectboard had set for the Middlebury Business Development Fund, or MBDF, when it was established by voters in 2012.

MIDDLEBURY — Cocoa, whipped cream and marshmallows, popcorn and a goofy holiday movie (“Elf”), plus really cool college girls to look up to — what could be more inspiring to area middle school girls? It’s movie night at Middlebury College’s Sister-to-Sister program.

“It’s just a lot of fun because it’s with other girls my age and there are no annoying mean people,” said Middlebury Union Middle School seventh-grader Zora Duquette-Hoffman.

He became even more alarmed when the plane’s engine went silent.

“(The pilot) turned around (toward the landing strip), clipped a tree with his right wing, and went down,” Jerome recalled, the event forever seared in his memory.
