ADDISON COUNTY — During archery, rifle and muzzleloader seasons and Youth Hunting Weekend in October, November and December, Addison County weigh stations handled 772 deer, the third lowest total in the past eight years.

But that total is misleading. Department of Fish and Wildlife officials earlier this year decided not to issue doe permits to muzzleloader hunters in wildlife zones that included virtually all of Addison County.

NEW HAVEN — New Haven residents continue to grapple with whether — and on what terms — to accept the Vermont Green Line, a 400-megawatt renewable energy transmission project that proposes to site a large electrical converter station near the VELCO substation.

Last Tuesday, Dec. 8, more than 100 residents packed the New Haven Town Hall for an informational meeting, conducted according to Town Meeting rules and overseen by town moderator Pam Marsh.

WALTHAM — The Waltham selectboard came away from a Dec. 7 meeting with representatives of the companies proposing the Vermont Green Line saying it would recommend the town support the planned $600 million, 400-megawatt underground power line that would run from Beekmantown, N.Y., to New Haven.

“Our board was supportive of the plan,” said selectboard chairman Mike Grace in an email to the Independent. “We just wanted to get enough information to answer any questions at town meeting.”

MONKTON — Chris Grant pretty much had life by the tail.

He had his health, a home, a job and a Harley.

Then June 27, 2009, came along and changed his life forever.

Grant, then 36, was taking his motorcycle for a quick burn along Walker Mountain Road in Clarendon. He was a mile-and-a-half from his home when he rolled into a curve and saw an oncoming pickup truck that was veering across the centerline of the road.

MIDDLEBURY — A local dentist is seeking permission to build a pediatric dental office off Court Street in Middlebury, a practice that would serve children as well as adults with disabilities.

The project is being proposed by Brian Collins, a Cornwall resident with almost three decades of experience as a dentist — primarily in Texas. Collins and his wife, Anne, moved to Cornwall a couple years ago. Since then, he has been providing pediatric dental services at offices in Burlington, in hospital settings, and locally with Middlebury Dental Group.

MIDDLEBURY — Erin Davis has fond, vivid memories about how she and her neighborhood playmates used to regularly meet up for imaginative play and games in their native Ohio.

“I was never on a soccer team or a baseball team; I didn’t have a lot of scheduled activities — and neither did my friends at the time,” said Davis, now a Middlebury resident and a teacher of radio documentary at Middlebury College. “We had a lot of free time together to do all sorts of weird, goofy stuff.”
