BRANDON — Otter Valley Union High School just said “no” to bullying.

A controversial smartphone application used by students to bully others that was taken down in Rutland High School last December appeared at OV last week and met the same fate.

OV Principal Jim Avery said on Saturday that the presence of the After School app was brought to his attention on Monday, June 1, when two students met him that morning and told him about it. By Thursday, the entire school had mobilized against the app, its users and their bullying tactics.

FERRISBURGH — As retiring Ferrisburgh Central School educator Kathy Douglas tells it, she always knew she wanted to teach.

The native of Addison who grew up on her parents’ dairy farm recalled the first of what she said were many jobs centered on children.

“My first job was babysitting at the age of 12 for a teacher that had four boys, and I made 25 cents an hour,” said Douglas, who will wrap up a 42-year career at FCS on Tuesday.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials last week identified next April as the start-up time for the estimated $50 million reconstruction of the community’s two downtown rail overpasses, a project they again stressed would be messy, noisy and inconvenient during up to three years of work that will ultimately yield additional green space near St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and a concrete tunnel that will someday accommodate double-stack train cars.

Students put 'maker' spin on science

Posted on June 8, 2015 |

MONKTON — Fifth-grader George Collette’s entreaty to come see the science experiment waiting outside the Monkton Central School gymnasium this past Thursday afternoon was hard to turn down.

“Have you ever seen a marshmallow fly?” he asked.

Outside on the pavement, he and his team scrambled to ready their contraption. Using a bicycle pump, a length of PVC tubing and lots of tape, they used air pressure from the pump to launch marshmallows, as well as their favorite projectiles — wadded tissues soaked in water.
