HANCOCK — In 2011 Tropical Storm Irene steamrolled through the town of Hancock, delivering a series of potent haymakers to many of its roads, culverts and, to a certain extent, community morale.

Four years later, the eastern Addison County town of 323 residents is on a firm road to recovery, a renaissance that has produced an improved and expanded town green, an imminent relocation of the municipal offices to a reclaimed former schoolhouse, and ongoing renovations to the historic Hancock General Store building near the intersection of Routes 125 and 100.

BRISTOL — Bristol CORE, an organization whose goal is to maintain economic vitality in town, is gearing up to reapply for the Vermont Designated Downtown status that has helped local businesses thrive.

Since gaining Designed Downtown status for Bristol in 2006, the organization (formerly known as the Bristol Downtown Community Partnership) has raised funds to dress up downtown with new lampposts, new benches on the town green, plantings around the downtown, and safe and inviting access along Prince Lane.

Power line questions remain unanswered

NEW HAVEN — The tidy yellow house in mint condition has stood unsold since first constructed in 2005.

“Within months of when we broke ground, they broke ground,” said contractor Ken Ruddy of Fiddlehead Construction, remembering when VELCO dug in on its 2006 upgrade to the New Haven to West Rutland electric power lines.

For 10 years the yellow cape on Town Hill Road in New Haven has sat, sometimes rented but largely unoccupied, in the shadow of the 90-foot towers that carry VELCO’s 345 kV transmission lines across Addison County.

BURLINGTON — On Saturday evening in Burlington a film made by a former Middlebury resident will make its Vermont premiere, a documentary that, in part, highlights Middlebury’s pivotal role in making same-sex marriage the law of the land.

“The State of Marriage,” written and directed by former Vermont radio journalist Jeffrey Kaufman, brings to life the story of how Middlebury lawyers Beth Robinson and Susan Murray worked with Massachusetts attorney Mary Bonauto to develop a strategy that, according to Kaufman, succeeded on a nationwide basis.

BRISTOL — Around 40 teal-colored ribbons hanging from lampposts all around the Bristol village center announce that Turn the Towns Teal has come to Bristol. September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and the Turn the Towns Teal campaign aims to save women’s lives by “tealing” towns in all 50 states — and raising awareness of the disease and its symptoms.

Ribbons (biodegradable and made in the USA) stay up for all of September and are then removed.

LINCOLN — Community members brought questions straight to the source last week, when the Lincoln Community School Board hosted a question-and-answer session on the new Vermont law encouraging school consolidation with a lawmaker who helped shepherd Act 46 through the Legislature.

“We thought that a community forum on an important piece of legislation like this is always just a good starting point for any community going through changes,” said Rebecca Otey, Lincoln Community School Board chair.
