Construction will close Rt. 125 bridge for parts of April-June

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Construction crews are mobilizing heavy equipment for the upcoming replacement of the Sand Hill Bridge on Route 125 in East Middlebury, a project that contractors said will impose some short-term pain for neighbors and travelers in order to generate a finished product in a shorter period of time.

Supreme Court OKs fast food restaurant, Jiffy Mart on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — The Vermont Supreme Court of Feb. 21 ruled in favor of South Burlington firm Champlain Oil Co. (COCO), which since 2008 has been working to build a gas station, convenience store and fast-food restaurant on the former Route 7 site of the Ferrisburgh Roadhouse.

ANwSU offers JoAn Canning job of superintendent

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest Supervisory Union board has offered the ANwSU superintendency to current Orleans Southwest Supervisory Union Superintendent JoAn Canning, and the board expects Canning to accept the post on Thursday.

The ANwSU board made the offer on Tuesday morning after Canning, the last candidate standing for the post, made a daylong Monday visit to ANwSU.

UD-3 voters OK lease option

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union residents on Tuesday evening voted 306-118, by paper ballot, to allow the UD-3 school board to negotiate a lease with the town of Middlebury for a Creek Road parcel that would host an 11,500-square-foot recreation facility.

Seniors voice mixed feelings about relocating center

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury-area seniors have mixed feelings about the potential relocation of the Russ Sholes Senior Center from the municipal building at 94 Main St. to a proposed new recreation facility off Creek Road. Some of the center’s 12-14 “regulars” said they would have no problem making such a transition, while others said they’d prefer to see the facility remain downtown where they could continue to run errands at nearby stores and banks.

Three candidates vie for two seats on Lincoln selectboard

LINCOLN — Two incumbents and one former board member are vying for two seats on the Lincoln selectboard. Paul Forlenza, Elwin Isham and Will Sipsey will face off in one of only two contested races on the Town Meeting ballot.

Forlenza is a consultant who specializes in healthcare reform policy and health information technology. He has lived in Lincoln since 1999, and has owned land in town for 35 years.

Forlenza was first elected to the selectboard last year when the body expanded from three to five members.

Sled dogs keep Addison man young

How long in life can you continue to pursue physically and emotionally demanding hobbies that have you outside in extreme temperatures, facing challenging and even dangerous scenarios?

The answer for Ed Blechner, dog sled driver of almost 40 years, is “as long as I can.”

Blechner, now 66, first got into dog sledding in 1975. “I was always interested in dogs in functional, non-traditional ways,” he says. With a parallel interest in winter camping, working with sled dogs seemed like a natural hobby to pursue.
