VERGENNES — Back in 1907, Vergennes native William Gove Bixby surprised fellow townspeople in his will by leaving much of his estate — the bulk of which he inherited from his sister — for the purpose of building a new public library in his hometown.

Five years later, workers finished building the Bixby Free Memorial Library, and 100 years after that — on Oct. 13, a week from Saturday, to be precise — the Vergennes institution named after Bixby will hold a party to celebrate its 100th birthday.

National dairy trends taking toll on local farmers

Posted on October 1, 2012 |
By Xian Chiang-Waren

ADDISON COUNTY — With grain prices sky-high and milk prices dropping, a few family-owned Addison County dairy farms are closing their doors this fall.

Paul Audy of New Haven and John Roberts of Cornwall, both in their early sixties, cited a confluence of forces that prompted each of them to get out of the business they had been in for decades: the increasing financial challenges of running a medium-sized herd, the tumultuous market exacerbated by the dairy pricing regulations and the toll of working long hours for years on end.

Donated paintings add life to hospital walls

MIDDLEBURY — Tragically, Elise Braun spent a lot of time in hospitals during the years leading up to the April 2009 death of her daughter, Susan Sebastian, following a lengthy illness. It was an experience rendered gloomier by the bare hospital walls that surrounded the two Vermonters during the months leading up to Sebastian’s death.

“Susan said to her mother, ‘There are pictures in the hospitals, but none in the patients’ rooms,’” said Gil Myers, a retired attorney and friend of Braun.

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Maxine Fidler has long quipped about the legibility of her handwriting. Copious examples of it could be found in the individual files maintained for the approximately 200 patients in her growing Middlebury practice, Acorn Natural Medicine PLC.

Well, after nine months of after-hours work, Fidler has translated her scrawl-on-paper into what is becoming the universal language of physicians’ offices and hospitals throughout the state: Typed print and crisp charts securely stored and retrieved through a computer database.

MIDDLEBURY — Burlington Democrat Doug Hoffer knows that some Vermont politicians have looked at the state auditor’s job as a stepping stone to higher office.

Hoffer, 61, wants voters to know that he would be more than content to serve as auditor for the rest of his professional career.

“It’s the only job I am interested in,” Hoffer said. “I want it to be the last job I ever have.”
