Ferrisburgh selectboard proposes increase in town spending

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Wednesday adopted a roughly $1.935 million town spending proposal for the 2018-2019 fiscal year that would raise spending by about 4.1 percent, assuming voters also back charitable contributions on the ballot.

Former co-chief of ambulance service pleads in embezzlement

MIDDLEBURY — A former co-director of Middlebury Regional EMS has pleaded innocent to four felony charges of embezzlement, stemming from allegations that she stole a combined total of $7,802 from the nonprofit over a more than year-long period to pay for personal items, gifts for friends and her own medical expenses.

Lisa M. Northup, 46, entered her plea during her Jan. 22 arraignment in Addison Superior Court, criminal division.

Childhood obesity is on the rise; here's one way to resist it

MIDDLEBURY — The epidemic of childhood obesity has become something we cannot ignore. An estimated 25 to 30 percent of Vermont’s children are overweight or obese, according to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2011. These children are twice as likely to remain obese as adults as median-weight children are to become obese.

To local pediatrician Dr. Francisco Corbalan, these are very disturbing figures.

Funky, fermented artist turns labels into art

Have you ever really looked at the labels of products you use every day? Try it sometime, you might be surprised. Sure some labels never vary from their branding, but on other products you’ll see the thoughtful work of artists that changes over time.

Take for example Mike Kin. He’s been drawing the labels for Aqua ViTea Kombucha since their first batch in 2007.

Vote warned for $36.7 million ACSD budget

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board on Monday unanimously agreed to present Middlebury-area voters with a $36,762,479 spending plan to cover public school expenses in the seven district-member towns. This budget reflects a 1.32-percent spending decrease and would result in elimination of more than 20 full-time-equivalent jobs.

Whiting gun dispute unresolved as daily fines pile up

WHITING — Months after the Whiting Zoning Board of Adjustment upheld a Zoning Notice of Violation to Stickney Road resident Nicolas Iocco for operating an unpermitted commercial shooting range and for violating noise and safety provisions, Iocco and town officials remain at a standoff on his payment of $400 of daily fines that have piled up since May.

Local doctor helps Syrian refugee children in Lebanon

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Morris Earle Jr. probably goes through suitcases the way most people go through Kleenex.

The pediatrician has made Middlebury his home base for several decades, but his medical talents take him throughout the world. The most recent travel sticker on his Samsonite reads “Lebanon,” where Dr. Earle spent two months setting up a pediatric intensive care unit serving young Syrian refugees flooding that Middle Eastern nation.

Symposium focuses on women and leadership

Last week the Middlebury Women Leaders, a student-run organization at Middlebury College, held a three-day-long symposium featuring discussions and workshops led by women.

Among the events were a conflict mediation workshop by Middlebury College president Laurie Patton; a Q&A with Nancy Gibbs, the first female editor-in-chief of TIME Magazine; a discussion with the local Nulhegan Abenaki Native American Tribe; and a fashion show that benefitted She Should Run, a nonpartisan nonprofit that encourages women to run for public office.

January is surely the quietest month of my gardening year. Outdoor chores are limited to a little pruning, and it will be three months or more before the first flowers of spring — snowdrops, daffodils, Lenten roses to mention just a few — start to push their way through the cold earth to greet the new season.
