Tears and tributes flow at Rep. Greg Clark’s funeral

BRISTOL/VERGENNES — Classes might have been cancelled, but school was definitely in session on Tuesday afternoon at Mount Abraham Union High School, where students, teachers and community members packed the auditorium to bid farewell to one of their most beloved teachers, Greg Clark.

Vergennes receptive to treatment center

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials and some neighbors of the former Briarwood Manor nursing home at 1 Alden Place said they could support the proposed reuse of the property as a 19-bed residential treatment facility for young women dealing with substance abuse and self-injury issues — provided organizers can assure the building will be secure and the program is well-run.

Vergennes shopkeeper ventures into some familiar territory

VERGENNES — In October 1982, Linda Cook, then 20, went to work as a retail clerk for Fishman’s Department Store owner David Coen at the corner of Main and Green streets, right in the center of Vergennes.

Since then, Cook’s career has never left the heart of downtown, although she did switch sides of the road: She worked from 1997 to 2005 at Classic Stitching, on the other side of Green Street, after Coen closed Fishman’s in 1997.

Now-vacant Vergennes nursing home eyed as treatment center

VERGENNES — The former Briarwood Manor nursing home at 1 Alden Place in Vergennes could soon be the headquarters of a 19-bed residential treatment facility for adolescent girls and young women who are battling drug addiction and/or “self-injury behaviors.”

ANwSU school head sets date for retirement

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent Tom O’Brien will retire following the 2013-2014 school year after 13 years in Vergennes, and on Nov. 28 he received the ANwSU board’s approval to work less than full-time — on a 60-percent basis — during the upcoming academic year.

Last Wednesday the ANwSU board also gave approval to O’Brien to negotiate with longtime Addison Central School (ACS) Principal Wayne Howe about coming aboard as a part-time ANwSU assistant superintendent next year.

State creates $1M grant fund for food and forestry firms

MIDDLEBURY — State officials late last week announced that they are soliciting applications from entrepreneurs who want a portion of nearly $1 million in grant funds set aside for food and forestry businesses.

Grants ranging from $3,000 to $100,000 will be awarded later this winter by Vermont’s Working Lands Enterprise Board from a $986,5000 fund designed to fuel the Green Mountain State’s economy and build its local food system while maintaining its open lands and natural vistas.

Lower federal grant challenges Boys & Girls club

VERGENNES — A smaller-than-expected annual federal grant award has left the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes scrambling in the middle of its fiscal year and will probably mean closing the club’s center for younger members.

Club executive director Mike Reiderer said when he and the organization’s board sat down and came up with this year’s budget, they had counted upon the same roughly $100,000 bequest from a federal program that had been awarded in the past two years.

Funeral service for Rep. Greg Clark set for Tuesday

VERGENNES — The family of longtime state Rep. Greg Clark of Vergennes, who was killed in a highway accident on Friday, have set a date and time for his funeral service.

Visiting hours will be at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes on Monday, Dec. 3, from 3 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Vergennes Congregational Church, where Clark was a member.

UPDATED 2:06 p.m.: Rep. Greg Clark mourned by colleagues, friends

VERGENNES — Longtime state Rep. Greg Clark, R-Vergennes, died on Friday, Nov. 30, after being struck by a southbound vehicle while scraping ice off his windshield at the side of Route 7 on Woodman’s Hill just south of Vergennes. He was 65.

Emergency responders were called to the scene at around 7:30 a.m. and immediately performed CPR on a critically injured Clark, who was taken to Porter Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Study looks at parking situation in downtown Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Downtown Middlebury possesses an abundance of downtown parking options, but locals, visitors and area workers continue to compete for “prime” spots in the Main Street area, resulting in low turnover of key spots near shops that a $5 parking fine and limited enforcement is not deterring.
