America, Brandon welcomes immigrants: New citizens sworn in at Neshobe School

BRANDON — They came from Thailand, Somalia, the Philippines, Canada, Sweden, Mali, Bhutan and more, but at the end of the May 10 naturalization ceremony at the Neshobe Elementary School in Brandon, 62 candidates from 29 countries left as Americans.

The event filled the school auditorium with elected officials, area residents, students and teachers. Even U.S. Rep. Peter Welch was on hand to be the first to welcome the newest citizens, the largest group ever gathered for the annual ceremony in Brandon.

Ferrisburgh farmers could face fine for illegal tree-cutting

FERRISBURGH — The Vorsteveld Farm could technically be fined up to $1,088,000 for cutting down 1,870 trees and shrubs with trunks of less than six inches in diameter and another 306 trees with larger trunks, all along a 0.75-mile stretch of Ferrisburgh’s Arnold Bay Road, according to Ferrisburgh Tree Warden Clifton Mix. 
Mix included those calculations in a May 16 letter to the selectboard that the board reviewed at its meeting that evening.

Vermont leads and lags in gender parity; report shows women's leadership trends

ADDISON COUNTY — Even a cursory glance shows that women occupy prominent places of leadership in Addison County. Women lead such organizations as Middlebury College, National Bank of Middlebury, the Patrons Cooperative Fire Insurance Company and the United Way. Women lead schools and school boards, run libraries, and chair selectboards and planning commissions.

A strong delegation of women represents the county in Montpelier.

Ferrisburgh board to move charter forward following close vote

Town, land trust seek to conserve open space at two Middlebury farms

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Land Trust (VLT) is seeking to raise a combined total of around $814,000 to permanently conserve substantial acreage on two of Middlebury’s dwindling number of dairy farms.

The money would protect from development 148 acres of the Butler Farm off Munger Street, and 210 acres of the Quarry Road Farm owned by Shirley Pominville and her son Joel.

Bridport's Dattilio combines love of art and hunting

BRIDPORT — Four years ago, Vergennes Union High School alum Dustin Dattilio was a junior at Castleton State College, studying to become an athletic trainer. He spent some of his down time in his dorm room with a sketch pad and pencil, doodling and taking requests from friends.

“It started out as celebrity portraits,” Dattilio recalled during a Monday interview at his Bridport home. “People would say, ‘draw so-and-so.’”

Rail bridges project draws criticism: Middlebury economy put into focus

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials converged on Middlebury Thursday to ask local folks their thoughts about a $52 million plan to replace the town’s two crumbling downtown rail bridges.

They got an earful.

Most of it was complaints about the potential economic impacts of a four-year construction process that some local merchants said they’re not sure they’ll be able to survive.
