College preparing employee buyouts, will send notices as soon as next week

MIDDLEBURY — As soon as next Friday, an unknown number of faculty and staff at Middlebury College will receive voluntary buyout offers from the college that will give them incentives to leave their positions.

The offers come after months of deliberation by the college’s senior administrative staff and are the culmination of a workforce rightsizing initiative launched in June 2018.

Home health agency's success is questioned

MIDDLEBURY — The new managers of Addison County Home Health & Hospice (ACHHH) are proud of their record in taking the New Haven-based nonprofit from the brink of financially insolvency in 2016 to more modern operation that in fiscal year 2018 posted an almost $900,000 financial cushion in an era of Medicaid and Medicare funding shortfalls.

Middlebury College to divest from fossil fuel companies

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s board of trustees voted unanimously on Jan. 26 to fully withdraw over time the institution’s $1.1 billion endowment’s investments in the fossil fuel industry.

The divestment vote came in the form of support for a plan called Middlebury Energy2028, which also includes new initiatives to reduce energy consumption and eliminate the use of fossil fuels on the college campus.

MIDDLEBURY — How often do you think about the composer when you’re listening to classical music? Be honest…. For most of us, it’s not much at all, right? And that’s OK.

“There’s something really nice about experiencing classical music; letting it wash over you,” said Matthew Evan Taylor, an assistant professor in the Music Department at Middlebury College. “But for some reason, nobody is perturbed that the fourth concert you go to is all white men.”

Vergennes-area residents to vote on $22 million school spending plan

VERGENNES — After being thrown a last-minute curveball by state education officials, the Addison Northwest School District Board on Thursday adopted a proposed budget for next school year that would raise the education property tax to five Vergennes-area municipalities by about 5.6 percent.

A majority of those board members present OK’d a 2019-2020 spending plan of $22,139,341 that if approved in March could raise taxes in the five ANWSD communities by about 9 cents.

Offering hope: Locals in recovery

MIDDLEBURY — Garrett Charleton knows what makes a good employee. He successfully ran his company, Happy Valley Painters, in Rutland County for 21 years before moving it to Middlebury this past November.

Among his past employees have been people recovering from substance use disorder. These people sometimes have difficulty finding a good job — even in an economy like Vermont’s that has a shrinking workforce.

Farmers want credit for their work keeping land and air clean

MONTPELIER — A broad-based coalition of Vermont farmers headed to Montpelier Friday to propose a pilot project that could transform the state’s accounting system for agriculture.

Developed by the Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition of Addison and Rutland counties, the Franklin-Grand Isle Farmer’s Watershed Alliance and the Connecticut River Watershed Farmers Alliance, the project concept is simple:

Pay farmers to produce healthy soil, clean water and a sustainable working landscape.

FERRISBURGH — A Vergennes nonprofit is inviting the public to visit Lower Otter Wildlife Management Area to view an active timber harvest this week.

Vermont Coverts, in conjunction with the state departments of Fish and Wildlife and Forest Parks and Recreation, will host the workshop “From the Tailgate: Active Harvesting” on Thursday, Jan. 31, 1-3 p.m. at the wildlife area off Sand Road in Ferrisburgh.
