MIDDLEBURY — Town Meeting Day business is most often about beginnings — the start of a political career, the minting of a new budget or the launching of a new program.

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The estimated cost of replacing downtown Middlebury’s Main Street and Merchants Row rail bridges has grown 30 percent, from $40 million to $52 million, Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials confirmed on Monday. The increase is largely associated with the anticipated expenses of detouring Vermont Rail trains during the height of construction.

Woody Keppel Wellness4599.jpg

VERMONT — Clowns are creepy. Most of us are afraid of them, even if we don’t technically have Coulrophobia.

“I’m afraid of that kind of clown, too,” said Charlotte resident Woody Keppel, who’s been clowning since the early ‘80s. “Clowning is a misrepresented term... We’re not all the big Bozo, Ringling, scary clowns.”

So what kind of clown is Keppel? Think of him as an “eccentric character” having fun.

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Hogan Elementary School students Dahlia Harrison and Nell Brayton learned a couple of important lessons during the past month that can’t be taught in the classroom.

American Radical preview Kate.jpg

Before actor, playwright and time-traveler Kate Redway decided to transform herself into the 19th century feminist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, she had never heard of the woman or her crucial role in the battle for women’s rights. But once she learned of Stanton’s enormous influence on the movement, she resolved to bring her story back to life for today’s audience. You can see the result on stage at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury, when Middlebury Actors Workshop presents her play “American Radical,” opening on March 3.
