At the tender age of 11, V Smiley wanted to be the fashion editor at Vogue.

After graduating with a degree in art history and English from St. Mary's College in Maryland, she wanted to be part of the Los Angeles arts scene.

Now the 31-year-old is back home on the family farm in New Haven with her mom Susan and her partner Amy, making preserves with fruit, honey and aromatics.

Smiley's a dreamer, to the core.

ORWELL — Memorial Day parades are good at providing a yearly reminder of the tremendous sacrifices that have been made by men and women in the armed forces.

Unfortunately, the spotlight on those sacrifices tends to dim when the marching bands have played their final tunes and the confetti has been cleared from the parade routes.

Bike club revs up for summer Eric Berg Julie Matthew cmyk.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Amanda Hall didn’t have much experience when she first started mountain biking.

“I only owned a department store bike so that I could ride with my kids,” she said. “I was never that into biking.”

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Memorial Day Parade, a production of American Legion Post 14, is generally acknowledged as Vermont’s largest.

But according to Post 14 Service Officer and longtime parade organizer Henry Broughton, the parade got off to a humble start: It ran along just a short stretch of Main Street.

“It went from the memorial service down to the bridge,” said Broughton, now 85. “We only had two bands. We had a little band from the high school, and the Weeks School had a pretty good-sized band.”

Big games, little games, board games, card games, strange games, familiar games, games in boxes and opened games, spread about the shops on various tables.
