South Lake cleanup plan is coming together

ADDISON COUNTY — State water quality experts are nearing completion of their game plan for improving water quality in the South Lake Champlain basin, one of 15 designated watersheds statewide.

The plan’s key principle: “Protect the best, and restore the rest.”

“That’s a really easy way to look at the scope of work. Protect the best. Maintain, restore, enhance the rest. The basin plans try to identify those opportunities,” said Ethan Swift of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Town offices see surge in visitors as many pay taxes early in light of new law

ADDISON COUNTY — In Ferrisburgh’s Route 7 town offices last week, longtime Assistant Town Clerk and Treasurer Pam Cousino shook her head about the unusual number of visitors and phone calls at a time when she and her co-workers probably had hoped to catch up on a few tasks.

“I thought it was supposed to be quiet this week,” Cousino said.

Vermont educators share school merger success stories

NORTHFIELD — State officials used Gov. Phil Scott’s Dec. 18 Education Summit to drive home the point that school mergers have saved significant amounts of money and enabled merged districts to improve educational opportunities for students.

Two panel discussions at the summit featured administrators and school board members from merged districts.

New director at Ferrisburgh's Rokeby Museum has strong experience in marketing history

FERRISBURGH — Rokeby Museum’s board of directors did not have to search far and wide when museum director Jane Williamson announced this summer she would retire at the end of 2017 after 22 years leading the Ferrisburgh nonprofit.

Instead, the board looked around the table toward its president, Vergennes resident Catherine Wood Brooks, and she agreed to assume the title of Rokeby director, effective Dec. 3.

Bristol lumber company adopts a high-tech vision

BRISTOL — Statewide renewable energy mandates that kicked in this year are helping an important local industry — production milling of trees — upgrade its energy infrastructure so that it can modernize equipment and increase capacity.

“Technology is playing a more and more important part in our industry,” said A. Johnson Lumber Co. General Manager Ken Johnson. “If you’re  going to be competing in the production (milling) industry it’s kind of a technological arms race.”
