Mobile slaughter business pitched

NEW HAVEN — A Weybridge man is proposing to establish the state’s first mobile slaughterhouse for large animals, a business he said will bring services directly to producers and help fill a sizable void of meat processing facilities in Vermont.

Kindergarten class presents local legend

FERRISBURGH — A part of the nation’s history — or at least a fanciful version of a local legend — will come to life at Ferrisburgh Central School on Friday morning.

At 10:30 a.m., the 17 members of kindergarten teacher Josh Brooks’ class will present their version of how American Commodore Thomas MacDonough outfoxed the British at the mouth of Otter Creek.

In the pupils’ short play, MacDonough receives help from, among others, a fictional farm boy, George Washington, and Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys.

Bristol farm approved for Cow Power project

BRISTOL — The Vermont Public Service Board has given the green light to a major methane-to-electricity facility at one of the county’s largest dairy farms.

It was this past Jan. 6 that Four Hills Farm requested a certificate of public good from the Public Service Board to install and operate a 525kW methane electrical generating facility at its 722 Burpee Road headquarters in Bristol. Four Hills has 2,500 head of cattle, around 1,250 of which are currently being milked.

VUES picks former pupil to be new school principal

VERGENNES — The new Vergennes Union Elementary School principal has degrees from Middlebury College and the University of Vermont, is now serving as the president of the Vermont Principals’ Association and has nine years of administrative experience at Mount Abraham Union and Proctor Junior/Senior high schools.

Those and other impressive bullet points on June Sargent’s résumé helped her stand out among 16 candidates and three finalists for the job, said VUES board chairwoman Tara Brooks.

Friends remember Sheriff Jim Coons, the face of local law enforcement

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Sheriff Jim Coons, who died on Monday evening at the age of 59, was recalled by fellow law enforcement officials as a gregarious, savvy and cooperative public servant who dramatically transformed his department during his three decades in office.

“Jim Coons was the iconic face of law enforcement in Addison County and a bridge between the past and present,” said Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley.

“He will be a tough act to follow.”

County jail gets solar hot water

MIDDLEBURY — When you get into hot water, you can wind up in the Addison County Sheriff’s Department (ACSD) lockup. Those who find themselves in that predicament can take a little solace in knowing that the hot water they use at the jail will have been made in an environmentally safe manner.

Maple legislation seeks to expand markets

MONTPELIER — Rising maple syrup production in Vermont is sending more sugarmakers across state lines seeking new buyers for their product.

Now, sugarmakers also are looking to Montpelier as legislators debate a bill that the Vermont Maple Sugarmaker’s Association says would make Vermont syrup more marketable on national and international markets. The bill, which passed the Senate and is now in the House Agriculture Committee, would change syrup labeling laws and establish a food safety certification program for sugarmakers.

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union Elementary School fourth-grader Kathryn Wyckoff has always loved to read, write and paint, and for the past year or so has worn a feather in her hair.

Thanks to those language and artistic skills, Kathryn now has a feather in her cap, too.

Kathryn, a 10-year-old Panton resident, just won a statewide student poster contest sponsored by the Federal Women’s Program Council of Vermont.

Small group passes $6.1M ID-4 budget

MIDDLEBURY — On Wednesday, April 11, around 30 people voted unanimously in favor of a 2012-2013 spending plan of $6,144,811 for Mary Hogan Elementary School.

Bonnie Bourne, co-principal of the Middlebury school, said folks present at the ID-4 school district annual meeting asked a few clarifying questions about the budget before endorsing it by voice vote.

MIDDLEBURY — Joe McVeigh’s special talent is in teaching English, but he hasn’t been spending a lot of time lately in countries where that language is most widely spoken.

That’s because McVeigh’s English teaching skills, and the books he has co-authored on the subject, have taken him to more than 45 countries where people are eager to absorb a language that they see as a passport to success in business, education and cultural pursuits.
