ADDISON COUNTY — He only needs a room, a few decent meals, a table to work on and access to the outdoors. In exchange, Jim Mott promises a painting and pleasant company.

“It’s just art for hospitality around the USA,” he says of the Itinerant Artist Project, his 16-year-old mission to spread the gift of art to strangers across the country.

Since 2000, Mott has spent one month each year touring different parts of the country, and staying with hosts in exchange for a six-by-nine-inch painting.

CORNWALL — It took a long time for Jamie McKenna, Marcel Leduc and Dave Rossiter to choose a name for their new company.

They wanted something original — something that would reflect the uncommon and striking craftsmanship they have tried to produce in each of their building and design projects.

Pipeline foes trying a new venue for appeal

BRISTOL — Bristol attorney Jim Dumont believes his latest salvo against Vermont Gas Systems’ Addison Natural Gas Project has the potential to stop the pipeline in its tracks.

Dumont asserts that the 41-mile natural gas pipeline being built from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes is a distribution project and hence belongs under the Act 250 land development umbrella; not a transmission project, which would rightfully be overseen by the Public Service Board.

Mayer pens story of intrigue and redemption in Weimar Germany

By John Flowers

Jack Mayer and book.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Yom Kippur — the holiest day on the Jewish calendar — is about atonement, “a day to seek God’s forgiveness for our transgressions,” says Dr. Jack Mayer, a beloved local pediatrician and budding author.

So it seems only fitting that Mayer should become so inspired by a Yom Kippur sermon back in 1992 that he would spend the next 24 years faithfully penning a compelling story of redemption, centering on a villain in one of the darkest periods in human history: The birth of the Third Reich in Germany.

SHOREHAM — On the south side of Shoreham’s Lemon Fair Sculpture Park, between two life-size statues of horses and a giant silver circle, sculptor Peter Lundberg is working on his latest project, a concrete piece that will tower 30 feet into the air.

The artist, known internationally for sculpting giant, concrete arcs, is setting a mold for a sculpture that will be unearthed and erected at the same site — the park is on the south side of Route 74, just past the Cornwall town line — where he is now creating it.
