MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s Nelson Recreation Center used to almost shake with the din generated by frenzied crowds cheering the Panthers to several NCAA ice hockey titles.

On Friday, a 77-year-old man attired in simple orange robes kept the Nelson’s 2,800-person crowd silent and in the palm of his hand. He returned Saturday morning for a repeat performance.

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems and International Paper Co. on Wednesday announced a $70 million pact through which the South Burlington-based utility would supply natural gas to the paper company’s Ticonderoga, N.Y., mill as soon as 2015.

The agreement, contingent on approval by the Vermont Public Service Board, calls for a 10.5-mile pipeline to be built under Lake Champlain as an offshoot of the Addison Natural Gas Project that has already been pitched to extend natural gas service south from Chittenden County into Vergennes and Middlebury.

ADDISON — Here’s some good news for Addison County localvores: The local foods movement is extending from your plate to your pint glass.

Across the state, encouraged by the UVM Extension Crops and Soil team’s Vermont Hops Project, more local hops growers are cropping up each year.

Kris Anderson, the owner of the Addison Hop Farm, is one of them. Anderson, a longtime homebrewer, began growing hops because he was looking for an “interesting crop” to play around with.

MIDDLEBURY — Burlington Republican Jack McMullen has perhaps best been known in Vermont’s political circles for having been unable to identify the correct number of teats on a cow when put on the spot by his irrepressible U.S. Senate GOP primary opponent Fred Tuttle in 1998.

Fourteen years later, McMullen himself is chuckling about that legendary misstep and is touting his credentials as a candidate for Vermont attorney general, a post he hopes to wrest from longtime Democratic incumbent Bill Sorrell.

VERGENNES — The annual Vergennes Union High School senior class fall charity walk-a-thon, which concluded atop Mount Philo on Oct. 9, raised more than $3,000 to help an Athens, Ga., resident with connections to Vermont in her battle with a rare form of bone cancer.

Keri Kinsel, 27, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in January, and has undergone treatments since then. Doctors at the nonprofit Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., say that a bone marrow treatment more common in Europe will help prevent the cancer from returning to Kinsel.
