Posted on August 14, 2017 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Professional appraisers next month will begin fanning throughout Middlebury to assign updated values to all properties in the community.

It’s all part of Middlebury’s first town-wide reappraisal since 2005. This state-mandated project calls on communities to adjust property tax assessments to fair market value and “bring all properties into an equitable state,” according to longtime Middlebury Assessor Bill Benton.

Bristol police chief turning in badge after 31 years; Gibbs to retire at the end of August

BRISTOL — Had he been just a little bit shorter, longtime Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs might have become an Air Force pilot, but at 6-foot-4 he was too tall to fit in the cockpit by Air Force specs.

Instead his desire to serve his community and — he frankly admits — a love of the adrenalin that comes from being the calm authority figure in an emergency led to 38 years as a policeman, 31 of those with the Bristol Police Department.

Gibbs joined the Bristol police in 1986, and became chief in 1992.

FieldDays1027.jpg

Editors note: One of the great things about the Addison County Fair and Field Days is there is so dang much to take in the farm animals, the food and drink, the competitions, the thousands of friends and neighbors wandering around the crowded fairgrounds in the middle of a rural paradise. Here are a few snapshots from the 69th annual fair that we gathered last week.

BRISTOL — Monday night the Mount Abe Renovation Committee voted to recommend bringing a $35 million renovation bond to voters this coming November. The committee’s recommendation now goes before Addison Northeast Superintendent Patrick Reen and the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union board for official consideration.

NEW HAVEN — As the sun shone down on the opening day of the 2017 Addison County Fair & Field Days, several miniatures donkeys earned class titles and one became overall champion. But ascertaining which deserved the crown was not as easy as it might seem.

“It’s a lot harder (to judge) donkeys because when they get into their stubborn or scared streak they don’t always walk as straight as they normally would,” said Kathy Kennett, this year’s judge.

ORWELL — Best known for its holiday turkeys and year-round frozen turkey sausage, Stonewood Farm is experimenting with something new.

Popcorn.

“We’ve been fooling around with it off and on for 10 years on a small scale, just for home use,” said Paul Stone. “Two, three years ago we got serious about it and grew an acre and started selling it at the (Middlebury Natural Foods) Co-op. So now we’re up to 3.5 acres this year.”

By By MICHELLE MONROE St. Albans Messenger

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Vermont’s sole Congressman, Democrat Peter Welch, is hopeful Congress will be able to address some of the weaknesses in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), more commonly called Obamacare, following Republican efforts to repeal the popular law.

Welch is part of a bi-partisan group in the House of 20 Republican representatives and 20 Democrats calling themselves the Problem Solvers. They have proposed four actions Congress can take to reduce premiums in the individual insurance market and provide stability for insurance companies.
