MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard members on Tuesday said they are satisfied with the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s latest update and assessment of the upcoming downtown rail bridges construction project, but affected property owners want more information and remain poised to take legal action if it is not forthcoming.

Through their attorney, Peter Langrock, the coalition of downtown property owners in an April 11 letter made a total of 18 questions and information requests of the town and VTrans.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council on Tuesday voted, 4-3, to extend its South Maple Street sidewalk southward to the city line and beyond to a Waltham 14-unit affordable housing project proposed by the Addison County Community Trust (ACCT).

Extending the sidewalk a total of 492 feet, including about 120 feet into Waltham, would also serve a half-dozen city homes south of Thomas Circle, where the sidewalk now ends on the east side of South Maple Street.

BRISTOL — “What our players and what the Cuban players ... did in those six days did more for government relations between our two countries than has been done in the last 40 years by the governments,” Little League baseball coach Jim Carter said.

Carter, retired University of Vermont baseball coach and grandfather of Bristol 12-year-old Carter Monks, was referring to the trip that he, Monks and 10 other Vermont Little League baseball players made to Cuba last week.

“Are you bringing your board?”

It was January and I was in California, packing up my car to drive back to Middlebury College in Vermont when I read that text from my friend and fellow wild man Christian Johansen.

What? Was I bringing my surfboard to Vermont, a landlocked state, in the middle of winter? Was he out of his mind?

VERGENNES — It was just a routine call to Vergennes police on a Monday morning, in this case Nov. 30, 2015, made by an employee of the Monkton Road branch of Merchants Bank — there were suspicious people outside the bank in a car.

But because that call was made and because police followed up, 10 days later U.S. marshals arrested a New Jersey man, Arun Aftab, 33, on a federal felony weapons charge.

Vermont farmers unhappy with dairy insurance

ADDISON COUNTY — For Weybridge dairy farmer Nate Miller, a federal program that provides insurance against wide swings in milk and feed prices hasn’t made much of a difference to his farming operation — other than the money he’s laid out annually for premiums and administrative fees.

Miller’s operation is on the smaller end of the scale in Addison County, with a total of 54 cows and milking around 30. But the story is the same for Bob Foster of Foster Brothers Farm in Middlebury, which milks around 432 cows and has a total herd of over 500.

MIDDLEBURY — Many of Vermont’s small towns have a Civil War monument, but how many local residents still come to these piles of marble or granite as places of memorial and healing and how many just drive by with their eyes fixed ahead on a downtown parking spot?

These kinds of questions — What do we commemorate as a nation and as a community? Whose story do we tell? And how do we tell it? — are behind the current exhibit in Middlebury College’s Davis Family Library of a panel from the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

ADDISON — The Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area is best known for the annual visit of thousands of snow and Canada geese to its farm fields and wetlands. But Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department officials say — and many year-round visitors already know — there is much more to the 2,858-acre site that includes land in Panton and Bridport as well as Addison.
