VERGENNES — The owners of Kennedy Brothers complex in Vergennes struck a deal in May to lease for four years, with an option to buy, the former 14 North Main St. home of Denecker Chevrolet. The move will allow Kennedy Brothers’ biggest tenant, Shacksbury Cider, to continue to expand its operations in Vergennes.

Kennedy Brothers co-owner Bob Feuerstein said he expects the Vergennes Development Review Board to approve a conditional use permit for conversion of most of the former auto dealership into warehouse and storage space for the specialty cider firm.

ACSD busing expenses to skyrocket next year

Posted on June 11, 2018 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central School District officials will need to do some creative accounting to mitigate the financial impacts of a new, three-year busing contract that will result in a 41.5-percent hike (approximately $400,000) in transportation costs next school year compared to the current pact that expires on June 30.

In years two and three of the contract, the rate will increase by 2.5 percent over the previous year. So in FY2019-2020 the contracted amount will increase to $1,139,369, and in FY2020-2021, the amount will increase to $1,167,853.

Verg Small City Mkt robber mark triolo.jpg

BURLINGTON — A Texas man who police say stole more than $6,000 during a stick-up at a Vergennes market as part of a cross country armed robbery spree pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court in Burlington last week.

Mark Triolo, 46, was shot by police in Brattleboro on May 4, three days after the armed holdup at the Small City Market in Vergennes.

Triolo also is a suspect in two armed robberies in Southern Vermont both within an hour before the shooting by Brattleboro and Vermont State Police, records show.

VERGENNES — Many things have changed during Addison resident Jane Spencer’s seven-year tenure at the Bixby Memorial Library, which will conclude on June 29.

But it’s probably safe to put technology at the top of the list now that the historic Vergennes library offers a half-dozen patron computers, a strong Wi-Fi signal, e-books and e-magazines, new computer bars, and, soon, a remote printing station.

SALISBURY — Most kids learn about good environmental stewardship through school books, documentaries and/or their parents.

Students at the Salisbury Community School have been doing their environmental learning where it matters most — outdoors, where they’ve been picking up litter in their community and pulling invasive weeds from nearby Lake Dunmore.

VERGENNES — When the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes was founded in 2000 its teen members could take a short stroll across Monkton Road from Vergennes Union High School to the club’s first home, in the National Guard Armory.

If all goes well that walk will be recreated within about three months, just as the school year begins.

The club has agreed to purchase a former medical office on 1.87 acres at 20 Armory Lane, a building that is, according to Google Maps, a three-minute walk from VUHS.

County election slate takes shape

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — An Aug. 14 primary election will be required to whittle down a surplus of Democrats competing for Addison County sheriff and the two seats representing the Addison-4 district in the Vermont House.

Meanwhile, three other districts will feature no races at all for the general election, barring an eleventh-hour bid by an independent or write-in candidate. Incumbent lawmakers representing the Addison-1, Addison-2, Addison-3 and Addison-5 House districts currently have no competition for new two-year terms in Montpelier.
