MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials converged on Middlebury Thursday to ask local folks their thoughts about a $52 million plan to replace the town’s two crumbling downtown rail bridges.

They got an earful.

Most of it was complaints about the potential economic impacts of a four-year construction process that some local merchants said they’re not sure they’ll be able to survive.

Ferrisburgh OKs charter in close vote; If Legislature approves, board authority grows

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents in Australian balloting on Thursday backed a new town charter that would give the selectboard the power to appoint Ferrisburgh’s town clerk and treasurer — but only by a two-vote margin in low turnout.

The tally backing the charter was 61-59, and only about 5.5 percent of Ferrisburgh’s eligible voters showed up at the town’s Route 7 office building to make their opinion known.

n City considers trees LEAD doomed horizontal.jpg

By ANDY KIRKALDY

VERGENNES — Several trees on the Vergennes downtown green are throwing too much shade, according to officials at last week’s city council meeting, specifically on the park’s struggling grass.

“I want to grow grass in the park,” said City Manager Mel Hawley.

The issue is simply “a tremendous lack of sunlight” choking off grass, Hawley said, adding as a result, “five major trees need to come out of the park.”

Jenny Bower: Fixed on Baroque music

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Elsie Lynn Parini

Jenny2265.jpg

VERGENNES — When you think of a church organist, it’s probably nothing like Jenny Bower. She’s 26, holds two Masters degrees — one in Organ and Harpsichord performance and the other in Geology and Earth Science. She likes Baroque, experimental classical music and is known to rock purple lipstick. And while, she plays the organ for the Vergennes Congregational Church every Sunday, she also plays in Burlington, Montpelier and pretty much any place else that will let her practice on their keys.

Bleeding hearts bring grace to spring gardens

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Judith Irven

Bleeding hears_2851-.jpg

Everyone loves Bleeding Hearts, with their delicate flowers — each reminiscent of a little pink heart with a tiny drop of blood dripping from it — that are perfectly complimented by mounds of dainty fern-like leaves. They bloom in mid-spring, once the weather is settled and winter’s chill is out of the ground.

There are actually several kinds of Bleeding Hearts and their near relatives — all of which make delightful plants for the spring garden.

MIDDLEBURY — For 208 years, the majestic Congregational Church of Middlebury has symbolically stood vigil over downtown Middlebury from its perch at the intersection of North Pleasant and Main streets.

Workers are currently putting some of the final touches on a sibling structure that will provide much-needed program space for the church’s growing membership, youth education classes and humanitarian outreach efforts.

n Love of goats LEAD GoshenIceHouse9436.jpg

GOSHEN — On a gorgeous day in May, Goshen farmers Chad and Morgan Beckwith are taking their goats on a walk. The small herd follows along through the woods like a happy pack of large shaggy dogs, browsing on everything in sight. Partway through the walk, Morgan hears an urgent bleating that can only mean one thing. Calliope — a one-year-old French-Alpine “show goat” from New Hampshire and the newest addition to Ice House Farm — is about to kid for the first time.

n Maple RUn marathon0103.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — A cool, misty rain greeted the almost 700 runners at the ninth annual Middlebury Maple Run as a hundred-plus runners huddled in the registration area early Sunday morning to keep warm ahead of the 9 a.m. start. Then the light rain stopped, the clouds lifted and a bigger crowd than some expected headed out for either the half marathon, or 3-mile fun run, under partly sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s — perfect temps for a longer run.
