Middlebury town officials OK temporary bridges plan

MIDDLEBURY — State and federal transportation officials on late Wednesday afternoon released an Environmental Assessment report on the potential impacts of the proposed $52 million replacement of the Main Street and Merchants Row rail bridges in downtown Middlebury.

The 196-page report details potential project impacts to threatened or endangered species; air and water quality; historic and cultural sites; and social and economic services in the downtown. It also offers possible mitigation steps for those impacts.

New dealership owners went from washing cars to calling shots

MIDDLEBURY — What started in 1974 as a used-car lot across from the Middlebury A&W now includes a Ford dealership on Route 7, a commercial store on Foote Street selling trucks and heavy equipment, and a detailing and reconditioning shop back on the original site — all under the G. Stone Motors umbrella.

Along with founder Gardner Stone, now 75, two other Stones have been on the scene since day one: his children, Todd and Darcy Stone.

Environmental assessment outlines RR bridges project's potential pitfalls

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously approved a plan to demolish the deteriorating Main Street and Merchants Row bridges over the railroad and replace them with temporary spans by early August.

Both bridges could be closed for almost a week late in July.

New Mount Abe repair plan to go before voters next year

BRISTOL — The new Renovation Committee has begun work toward formulating a plan to renovate Mount Abraham Union High School.

The committee is charged with determining the needs of the aging facility and with shaping “a potential bond measure to go before voters in the 2017-2018 school year.” It’s been given until August to make a recommendation to ANeSU Superintendent Patrick Reen.

Ripton father of three killed in Route 7 crash

SALISBURY — A 40-year-old Ripton man was killed Thursday morning after the car he was riding in was struck head-on by an oncoming vehicle on Route 7 in Salisbury.

Vermont State Police report that the two-car crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. on April 20 just north of the Salisbury Hog Farm, near Pomainville Drive.

After talking to witnesses, police determined that Shawn Newell, 33, of Vergennes was driving a 2010 Mazda MZ3 northbound at a high rate of speed, passing slower vehicles that were ahead of him.

Skiing champs teach skills to Alaska kids

MIDDLEBURY — Twelfth-graders Amelia Ingersoll and Ursula Volz are now expertly slaloming around the final gates in their respective academic careers at Middlebury Union High School.

But the pair of student-athletes recently took a week off to travel thousands of miles to become volunteer teachers of a sport they both love: Nordic skiing.

And their students were Native American children living at the Arctic Circle in Alaska.

Bridport woman crowned Miss Vermont 2017

VERGENNES — Bridport resident Erin Connor, 22, was crowned Miss Vermont 2017 at the Vergennes Opera House on Friday evening.

Connor, a 2013 graduate of Middlebury Union High School, is a student at the University of Vermont, where she is studying Public Communication. She performed American Sign Language to the song “The Greatest Love of All” in the talent portion of the competition. Members of the deaf community from Vermont and Massachusetts attended the show to see her perform.
