Weather Watch: February Thaw?

Shattered Ice on Middlebury River

January brought many thaws to choose from, rather than just one, and February’s first day brought a thaw as well.

(as seen to the left, after heavy rain at the end of January, the ice in the Middlebury River was ripped loose and strewn on the banks)

Wednesday would have seemed like a very warm day, but because I had just come back from a week-long visit to southern California (where it approached 80 degrees), the weather seemed a bit cool.  In reality, it was very warm for the first day of February -

Weather Watch: Flash freeze causes icy roads

icy woods

The mild conditions this winter have not been conductive to ice skating on our local waterways, but on Wednesday morning many Addison County residents took unplanned trips across ice - when traveling across driveways and parking lots!

The culprit? A warm front bringing unseasonable rain, followed by a cold front and plummeting temperatures - an effect some meteorologists call a “flash freeze”.

Snake Mountain from the secret side

Posted on December 7, 2011 | Blog Category:
By Christian Woodard

Snake Mountain has to be the most popular day-hike in Addison County. It’s an easy walk, the views are unique and expansive, and it’s only a short drive from anywhere else in our part of the Champlain Valley.

As such, I thought I’d never write about it. “Everybody already knows about Snake Mountain,” I thought, “Why clutter the internet with redundant recommendations?”

News Editor John McCright ruins his shoes in spectacular fashion

Note: This is continuing in the theme of dank, scummy holes to explore nearby. It also dovetails nicely with the Otter Creek theme. This is a dank hole under Otter Creek. You’ll love it.

Believe it or not, there's a cave behind these falls.

When I told my editor about the cave behind the falls in Middlebury, I failed to mention certain things.

Addison County (Under)side: Weybridge Cave

Note: this blog is called "Addison County Outside" or "The Great Outdoors." This week's blog entry is not truly "outside". It's not really "inside" either. Addison County Underground sounds like a nightclub, so I'm settling on "Underside."

Saturday I did something that I have never done. Caving.

“Caving?” you might say, “Don’t you mean ‘spelunking’”?

Addison County Outside: Mascoma River

Posted on October 29, 2011 | Blog Category:

Disclaimer: This river is not in Addison County. Or Vermont, even. It’s dirty, full of industrial debris, and you have to walk across busy streets to get back to the top. Out of five stars I give it half a star, and if it didn’t have one truly fun rapid it would get even less.

The Queechee Gorge: a caustic trip to eastern Vermont

Posted on October 27, 2011 | Blog Category:

Disclaimer: This description is for a river that is NOT Otter Creek. It's not even in Addison County, or the Champlain Basin, for that matter. It's on the other side of the mountains. However, its source is only about 15 miles from Otter Creek, and no matter how close Woodstock is to Massachusetts, it's still Vermont.
