ADDISON COUNTY — The four local union high school boys’ soccer teams didn’t really make their mark this fall, with only Vergennes winning a postseason contest.
But each squad played a number of competitive contests, especially Coach Kevin Hayes’ 5-8-3 Commodores, who lost seven times by one goal, twice to Division II champion Rice.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College football team thumped visiting Tufts on Saturday, 48-13, to finish its season with five straight wins and a 6-2 record, good for third place in NESCAC.
Middlebury quarterback Matt Milano accounted for all seven touchdowns against the Jumbos, who enjoyed their best season since 2008 and finished with a 4-4 mark. Middlebury has now won 20 of 24 games over the past three seasons.
MIDDLEBURY — An enthusiastic local tennis community rallied to raise $1,575 in support of the nonprofit Vermont Cancer Survivor Network, or VCSN, in a tournament held late last month in Middlebury.
Middlebury Indoor Tennis (MIT) and SoJo Tennis teamed up to host the benefit tennis tournament on Oct. 24-25 at the MIT club. Franz Collas, owner of SoJo Tennis, and Heather Potter, who volunteered her time, co-directed the tournament, which featured dozens of players taking part in three days of doubles competition.
HANOVER, N.H. — Vergennes resident Ron McConnell recently wrapped up his season throwing weights in elite masters track and field events with performances that leave him in a good position on the national scene.
MIDDLEBURY — After winning its third consecutive NESCAC playoff title this past weekend, the Middlebury College field hockey team will host an NCAA Division III Regional this coming weekend.
The No. 3 Panthers (17-1) will open NCAA play at 11 a.m. on Saturday, when they will meet the winner of a game late Wednesday between Commonwealth Coast Conference champion University of New England (16-6) and Great Northern Athletic Conference winner Simmons (13-5).

CASTLETON — A dozen Middlebury, Otter Valley and Mount Abraham/Vergennes union high school football players will join their counterparts from around the state this Saturday at Castleton State College, which is hosting the 2014 North-South Senior All-Star Football Game.
