Clippings by John McCright: Government savants know it all

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By John S. McCright

Doom and gloom, that’s all we hear about from the government. Hackers breaking into federal databases to steal mountains of information on common Americans, bureaucrats injudiciously spending tax money on poorly thought out projects, lawmakers arguing over the stupidest things while roads crumble, children missing much-needed medical care and so-called regulators letting Wall Street crooks drain our retirement accounts with impunity.

Eric Davis: Progressives must weigh their votes carefully

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Eric Davis

Emma Mulvaney-Stanak, the chair of the Vermont Progressive Party, has said the Progressives will likely run a candidate for governor in 2016, after having sat out the gubernatorial campaigns in 2010, 2012 and 2014. Opinion: Insurance hikes give jolt to school budgets

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Laurie Childers

I received the following notice last week in my Addison Northwest Supervisory Union email account: “VEHI (a nonprofit org that provides health insurance benefits to school employees) files 7.9% Contribution Health Rate Renewal with Dept. of Financial Regulation” — 7.9 percent!

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

Greg Dennis column color n Amy Sheldon on Skylight-03.jpg

Amy Sheldon wasn’t actually lost — she pretty much knew where she was in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks — but she felt lost. And alone.

In the dead center of the Adirondack wilderness and hiking by herself, she was headed up Cliff Mountain.

One source refers to Cliff as “the great Adirondack vertical swamp.” And as she started the climb on this cool, rainy day, Sheldon faced a trail with a lot of treacherously slippery rock.

Opinion: Views shaped by survival ethic

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Sean Parkyn

It is easy to think that with all the violence in the news today that the destructive side of human nature is getting worse. But a look at history will show that in fact our capacity for violence is not getting worse, but has stayed very much the same. Our potential for barbarity has existed alongside our potential for culture from ancient times up to the present day. The question has always been how to balance our instinctive drive for survival with how we view the world morally. It is our moral beliefs that inform our actions and these we learn at a young age.
