Posted on August 29, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Help wanted: Independent-minded resident willing and unafraid to devote hours of community service time to lay the foundation for a stronger Middlebury. Challenges: to imagine new opportunities for the town in changing times, and convince residents and community leaders to see each issue as an opportunity, not an obstacle. When and what: to fill the mid-year vacancy of Middlebury Selectwoman Janelle Ashley, who is relocating to Whiting. Compensation: pats on the back for a job well done, and knowledge that you’ve helped your community.

MIDDLEBURY — Three years after the Legislature passed Act 92, the Vermont Energy Efficiency and Affordability Act, the state is not on pace to reach the act’s goal of improving energy efficiency in 25 percent of Vermont homes (roughly 80,000) by 2020.

Instead, the state is likely to fall short of this goal by 28,000 homes.

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday dipped into a little-used city fund to help a needy nursing home resident, and also they also gave City Clerk Joan Devine greater authority in the future to use the money to give other deserving Vergennes residents a helping hand.

City Manager Mel Hawley told aldermen the Donnelly Fund was created in the 1940s in memory of former Vergennes resident John Donnelly. Started with $5,000, the fund was intended “to be used for the care of the worthy poor,” he said.

Funds sought for health center

By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — Those seeking to establish a federally subsidized health clinic in Bristol are looking for new funds after learning that a federal grant won’t come through this year.

The Five Town Health Alliance (5THA) had sought $650,000 to outfit a Federally Qualified Health Center, or FQHC, and pay the salaries of administrative staff. But due to late-April budget cuts, manifest in legislation known as a continuing resolution, the pool of money available for FQHCs was cut by almost one quarter.
