Locals contribute to 'Raiders' movie remake, which will be screened at Marquis

MIDDLEBURY — They’ll be rolling out the proverbial red carpet at Middlebury’s Marquis Theater this Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for the premier of a true cinematic blockbuster: “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

What’s that you say? Wasn’t that movie, starring Harrison Ford, released back in 1981? Is this an updated version with a couple of minutes of extra footage?

Nope.

St. Stephen's Church to host Celtic mass for peace

MIDDLEBURY — St. Stephen’s Church in Middlebury will offer to the community “A Celtic Mass for Peace — Songs for the Earth” as its third annual Good Friday Community Concert. The concert will take place at the church at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 25. All are invited to attend.

Bristol teen taking poetry performance to state final

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School senior Hannah Funk stepped onto the stage at the Barre Opera House this past Wednesday and recited one poem about a “flesh-eating wintry demon” and another about a Latina witch-healer. Actually, it was more than the typical classroom recitation; it was a performance in which Funk’s delivery became more and more animated as she worked her way through the pieces.

Panther women switch off U-Mass Beacons, 4-0, in NCAA quarter-final

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team sent another postseason crowd of about 1,000 fans home happy on Saturday, when the Panthers dominated UMass-Boston, 4-0, in an NCAA quarterfinal played at Kenyon Arena.

The crowd for the 21-4-3 Panthers’ semifinal against No. 1 Plattsburgh (27-1) at 3:30 p.m. Friday will not be as friendly — the Cardinals’ Stafford Arena, where the home team always enjoys solid support. The final is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Utility truck kills flagger on Route 7 in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A 75-year-old Wallingford man who was working as a traffic flagger on Route 7 just south of Three Mile Bridge Road was struck and killed by a utility truck on Friday morning.

Lawrence Kaminski was working for Green Mountain Flaggers Inc. when he was hit by a Eustis Cable Enterprises Ltd. truck driven by Tommy Carrier, 50, of Jericho.

Opinion: All must be vigilant to protect vulnerable in community

In these turbulent political times our women are becoming more assertive of their presence. We have an established woman representative who is vying for the presidency a second time, women will be serving on the front lines in battle in the military, and educated women are becoming forerunners in the business world. To note for all Americans is equal rights with equal pay. For me as a concerned voter, these are great strides in the mindset of our evolving democracy. For all people, by all people.

Tigers chosen as ice hockey all-stars

MIDDLEBURY — Two members of the Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team were chosen as either first- or second-team Division I Vermont all-stars.

Sophomore Tiger forward Andi Boe made the first team, where she was joined by BFA-St. Albans forward Aliza Ellis, Spaulding forward Jessica Scott, Essex defender Avery MacGillivray, Rutland defender Kailee Matteson, and Essex goalie Vika Simons.
