Panther field hockey tops Colby, headed to NESCAC semifinal

MIDDLEBURY — The fourth-seeded Middlebury College field hockey team blanked visiting No. 5 Colby in a NESCAC tournament quarterfinal on Saturday, 3-0, and will head to Amherst this weekend for the league’s final four.

The 13-2 Panthers (8-2 NESCAC) will take on the host Jeffs (13-2, 9-1 NESCAC) at 11 a.m., while No. 2 Tufts (15-1, 9-1 NESCAC) will meet No. 3 Bowdoin (13-2, 8-2 NESCAC) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Iconic church eyes $2.6m in upgrades

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Congregational Church of Middlebury a few years ago celebrated the 200th birthday of their picturesque place of worship at the top of Main Street. The flock is now seeking to prepare the church for its next 200 years with a $2.6 million capital improvement plan that includes repairing the front steps, upgrading the kitchen and placing a classroom addition onto the north side of the majestic building.

Tiger football set for Rebel rematch in state championship game

RUTLAND — The state’s two best high school football teams will meet on Saturday night in Rutland for the Vermont Division I championship, undefeated top seed Middlebury (10-0) and No. 2 South Burlington, which at 9-1 has lost only to the Tigers.

Game time on Rutland High School’s turf field has been set for 5 p.m.; it will follow earlier clashes for the D-III title between No. 1 Woodstock and No. 2 Mill River and for the D-II crown between No. 1 Lyndon and No. 2 Rice. The forecast as of midweek called for calm, but seasonally chilly weather.

Middlebury College football wins, remailns in title hunt

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College football team on Saturday kept its hopes alive for a share of the NESCAC title by defeating visiting Hamilton, 40-13.

The Panthers are 6-1, trailing only Wesleyan (7-0) and tied with Amherst, also 6-1. Wesleyan has to play at rival Trinity (5-2) on Saturday, while Amherst also has its rivalry game vs. Williams (2-5). The Panthers travel to meet Tufts (0-7).

Panther women's soccer to host NESCAC Final Four

MIDDLEBURY — The top-seeded Middlebury College women’s soccer team defeated visiting No. 8 Colby, 3-1, in a NESCAC quarterfinal on Saturday, and the 11-1-3 Panthers (8-1-1 NESCAC) will host the league’s final four this weekend.

The Panthers will entertain No. 6 Tufts (9-6, 5-5 NESCAC) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and No. 2 Williams (11-2-2, 7-2-1) will square off against No. 4 Trinity (12-3, 7-3) in the other league semifinal.

Women's cross country team wins league championship

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Middlebury College women’s cross country team won its 12th NESCAC championship on Saturday in an event hosted by Connecticut College. The Panther men also turned in a strong performance, placing second in the 11-team field.

The Middlebury women placed five of its runners among the top nine. The win was so convincing that any of the other top five racers combined would still not have beat the Panthers’ score of 29. Williams placed second with 51 points, followed by Tufts in third with 90.

In the past two weeks I’ve heard and read a lot about team character and chemistry. It’s always struck me as an athlete and an observer the intangibles matter, and for sure three recent teams have done nothing to change my mind.
