Panther football players, coach receive top honors

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College football coach Bob Ritter was named NESCAC coach of the year, and senior quarterback McCallum Foote earned NESCAC Offensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight season.

Seven other Panthers also earned postseason honors when the NESCAC all-league teams were announced. Joining Foote on the first-team were senior offensive lineman Jack Allard, senior tight end William Sadik-Khan and sophomore receiver Matthew Minno.

On the ball: Panther rugby takes on Nittany Lions for title

While several Middlebury College teams pursue NCAA Division III titles this weekend — women’s soccer at home in a sectional and the cross-country runners out in Indiana — a Panther club team will also be seeking a national championship, namely the perennially successful Middlebury rugby squad.

Vermont Gas files papers for pipeline through Cornwall, Shoreham

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas Systems on Tuesday officially filed a petition with the state’s Public Service Board (PSB) to launch its proposed “Phase II” natural gas pipeline project from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y., an action that sets the stage for what promises to be months of debate on the controversial plan.

School board weighs MUMS teacher cuts

Jessie Raymond: Join the culture club — make yogurt

When I was growing up, we never had yogurt in the house. Back in the early ’70s, I only knew one girl who ever ate the stuff, and her parents drove a VW bus. So my mother played it safe and fed us Sugar Smacks, presumably to discourage any antiestablishment leanings.

Mother, daughter killed in Brandon crash

BRANDON — A mother and daughter were killed in a head-on collision on Route 7 in Brandon just south of Otter Valley Union High School last Friday afternoon.

According to police, Kathryn Long, 63, and her mother Ruth Long, 93, both of Sudbury, were killed when their 2004 Subaru Legacy station wagon crossed the centerline and hit a Proctor Gas truck head on.

Brandon Police Chief Chris Brickell said the accident happened at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, and it prompted police to close Route 7 to traffic in both directions for several hours.
